The topic of cheating is a complex and sensitive one, and it is essential to approach it with cultural sensitivity and avoid generalizations. While it is true that cheating exists everywhere, some things are practiced differently in Japan! Here is a low down on the Japanese cheating culture.
Context and perception
Cheating, known as "uwaki" in Japanese, is frowned upon and seen as a breach of trust and commitment in a relationship and the majority of Japanese people value monogamy and loyalty in their partnerships. Interestingly, in Japan, married or unmarried couples have a legal obligation to remain faithful to each other. If one spouse is unfaithful, both the unfaithful spouse and the cheating party, may have an obligation to pay damages to the other.
Hostess and "compensated dating" culture
Japan has a unique entertainment industry, with establishments like hostess clubs where customers pay for the company and conversation with hostesses. While these interactions are primarily for entertainment purposes, they can sometimes blur boundaries and lead to extramarital affairs.
Married men cheat the most
According to a report by Japan Today, married men cheat the most as per a survey conducted. Nearly 40 % of married men have confessed to cheating while the percentage of married women cheating is 18.1 %. The survey also revealed that “married women who cheated were more interested in sex (27.6%) than appeasing their loneliness (26%)”. Several respondents felt that it's men who mostly cheat to satisfy a physical urge, while women are more emotionally invested and perhaps already looking for an end to their current relationship. This led to some of the men’s conclusion that women who cheat are worse.
Prostitution is more forgivable
As per the survey, what may be surprising is that many Japanese find prostitution to be more forgivable as it is a service paid for and lacking any emotional attachment.
