Top 5 things husbands should never forget on Karwa Chauth

The festive season in India has begun in full bloom with every passing festival making way for another one. After the country danced and rejoiced in the arrival of Maa Durga with Navratri and Durga Puja, it is now time to prep for Karwa Chauth. Karwa Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated by women in mainly northern and western India. According to the Drik Panchang, in 2025 the festival will be celebrated on October 10, with the puja muhurat being from 5:57 pm to 7:11 pm.

Why is Karwa Chauth celebrated?

Karwa Chauth is a festival that imitates the worship of Goddess Parvati who fasted in order to win the love of Lord Shiva as her husband. Thus, married women across the country carry out a nirjala (waterless) fast on this day to pray for a long life filled with prosperity, good fortune and harmony for their husbands. They also pray to lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Karwa Mata to be blessed with a long, love-filled marriage and commitment. For first-time husbands or those who have finally decided to wake up and support their wives through some difficult days, we have mentioned things that you must not forget on the auspicious day to make sure that your wife feels loved, respected and appreciated. Below, find five things husbands should never forget for Karwa Chauth.

3/7

Join her for the sargi

A woman does not eat or drink a sip of water for an entire day just to be able to seek some blessings for her husband. The day of Karwa Chauth begins with a pre-dawn meal called Sargi, typically prepared by the mother-in-law. However, for couples living alone, it is usually the woman who prepares her own sargi, which includes fruits, sweets and more. To make your wife feel supported and loved, wake up before dawn with her and help her out with her sargi to show her you appreciate her efforts for you. You can also surprise her with her favourite dishes in her sargi and prepare them yourself!

4/7

Get her a gift

One of the most important tasks when it comes to celebrating a day which is all about the love between a couple is getting your wife a gift. Karwa Chauth is more than just a fast, it is a showcase of the love your wife has for you and your bond. Thus, appreciating her efforts with a gift that she has on her wish list can definitely let her know how much you value her.

5/7

Dress up for the occasion

While your wife may or may not tell you, you must dress up for Karwa Chauth in traditional clothing, matching hers, if possible. The day is special for you both and your efforts also count. Be present before moonrise and read up on the rituals that you have to perform, such as helping her with the first sip of the water after the moon sighting.

6/7

Create a memorable moment

When the day is over and the rituals are done, make sure to create a special memory with your partner to remember the day and cheer on her strength of fasting an entire day for you. This could be a small gesture like going on a walk, planning a special dessert for her, watching her favourite film together or just spending some time chatting alongside her.

7/7

Don't pressurise her on anything

A woman who hasn't eaten for an entire day might experience a whole lot of mood swings and emotions, thus it is important that you be patient and caring towards her. Additionally, it could be that your wife is not able to complete the fast due to physical or emotional strains, so don't pressurise her on anything and be understanding towards her and her health on this day.
