How to read the body language of a liar

Liars are common in the world but somehow we keep expecting people to be honest with us in our day to day lives. There are people who tend to play mind games for different reasons. One such case is when contestants in Ekta Kapoor’s reality TV show Lock Upp were given a task. Munawar played mind games to win the game and the other contestants felt betrayed. In reference to that, if you are ever stuck in a similar situation where someone can use mind games to run past you, we bring to you a few body language signs that may rat them out.

2/9

Notice the hands

Liars use their hands and make gestures after they are done with speaking their lies. Why? Because their mind is too engaged in building a story in their head so they won’t use their hands while speaking. Also, when someone is lying, they unconsciously face their palms away from you. This means they are holding back some information.

3/9

Fidgeting

Many people fidget when they are lying unless they have a habit of fidgeting. Unnecessary itching also means that they are nervous but this could be due to other reasons as well.

4/9

The eyes

If the person is lying, stare at them directly. If they fidget, look away, it may mean they are lying.

5/9

The mouth

Unless it is a habit, if a person is rolling their lips where they almost disappear like a monkey pose, it could mean they are holding back or editing some fact

6/9

Complexion change

If someone goes white while talking, it could mean that you have struck a chord. The blood rushes out of the face and the liar can be easily caught.

7/9

Sweating

This may not always be necessary because some people sweat anyway, but in case it is out of character, you know what is happening.

8/9

Voice

See an unexpected change in the tone of the person? It is possible that he/she is lying to you. They could be trying to convince themselves with the fact they are blurting out. Even clearing their throat all of a sudden indicates there is a lie brewing, sometimes.

9/9

Catch the phrases

There are some very regularly used phrases or words that liars use. You may have heard them often around you. When they keep repeating - ‘Honestly’ and ‘‘I want to be honest with you’ it could be that they lie with a few twisted facts. It may not always be true but most of the time it is. Also, look out for slip ups. They may falter in their tones or fact statements. So tune your ear, eyes and mental presence accordingly.
