Never say these things to your mother-in-law

Relationship with the in-laws is always on a thin thread which can break with one single wrong move. Whether you like them or not, there are a few statements that must never be made to your mother-in-law. She is the mother of your spouse- always remember that! To avoid unnecessary conflict, never ever utter these words to your mother-in-law if you love your peace.

2/8

I did not ask for your opinion

People love giving free advice and it is a universal fact. What makes you think your mother-in-law is an exception? Besides she might have another point of view which can be of use. No matter how much you resent it, keep this thought to yourself!

3/8

I wish you had taught your child about this

Your partner is an individual, an adult, who should have learnt things outside his/ her parent’s wings. You cannot hold your mother-in-law responsible for everything. Sort it out with your partner and don’t bring his/her mother into this.

4/8

From whom did he/she inherit these bad habits?

This statement is rude and well are you perfect yourself? Even if you know that your partner picked up a certain habit from the parents, please keep this thought to yourself. It can become rather ugly or simply hurt the parent.

5/8

Can I get the receipt of the gift you gave me?

She gave you a useless gift or you don’t like her taste. Fine, then pass it on or try to use it if you can. Don’t forget your manners! She is giving you something that is itself very thoughtful of her, no matter how big or small. You cannot exchange everything. Don’t hurt feelings unless absolutely necessary.

6/8

Come over anytime

Now this one is more for you. Even if she is nice, do not say it. Because if she does start coming over to your place often, you will in the end get irritated. Some space is good for keeping good relations.

7/8

Your meals are so oily and fattening

Glistening with oil meals are okay when parents cook it. She is cooking with love so let her do it. If you have issues, volunteer to cook yourself instead of criticising. She is doing you a favour by cooking a meal for you or your spouse.

8/8

Please change your clothes, your outfit is not looking nice

Instead of being rude with this statement, say “you look prettier in that dress/saree/suit, why don’t you try that too and see?”... This is just an example. Say anything that does not criticise the way she looks directly. If you think she needs makeup, just bring your own makeup bad to her and ask her which one can you apply on her? Whatever works in your household.
