“You start every innings at zero": After ending engagement, Smriti Mandhana opens up with the most powerful words yet
Smriti Mandhana may be one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, but in her first major public appearance after ending her relationship with music composer Palash Muchhal, she reminded everyone that even icons go through deeply human chapters. And like many women navigating heartbreak, career pressure, and personal upheaval at the same time, she found her way back to the one thing that’s never failed her, her purpose.
When moderator Mandira Bedi gently asked how she manages to stay focused when life around her gets loud, Smriti smiled with that familiar calmness and said, “I don’t think I love anything more than cricket.”
“For us, the Indian jersey is everything,” she continued. “When you wear it, you automatically leave your problems outside. That one thought resets your whole system.” It was the kind of line that hits you, not because it’s perfect, but because it’s personal.
Smriti also spoke about India’s recent World Cup win, and her face lit up the way it always does when she talks cricket. “That victory wasn’t just a match… it was years of trying, failing, picking ourselves up again. We visualised that win for so long that when it finally happened, it gave us goosebumps.”

What touched her the most was seeing Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami in the stands. “We wanted to win it for them. When we saw tears in their eyes, it felt like women’s cricket itself had won. It was emotional in a way words can’t fully capture.”
Behind the calm, mature exterior, she also let us glimpse the little girl she used to be, the one who fell in love with batting long before the world fell in love with her cover drives. “As a kid, I didn’t know much. I just knew I wanted to be called a world champion someday,” she said softly.
And then, almost like sharing a life lesson picked up along the way, Smriti added two things she believes cricket and life, always teaches you:
“You start every innings at zero, even if you scored a hundred yesterday.”
“And don’t play for yourself. That’s something we kept reminding each other.”
In a moment where her personal life has been under public scrutiny, Smriti Mandhana didn’t talk about heartbreak or endings. She spoke about beginnings, resilience, purpose, and the quiet courage of choosing yourself again.
And in that, she reminded countless young women watching her:
Sometimes, when everything feels uncertain, going back to what centres you, your work, your passion, your calling, is not an escape. It’s healing.
