Things to know before getting a Golden Retriever puppy

One of the most popular pet dog breeds in the world, the Golden Retrievers are a favourite among many dog lovers— and for good reason! Golden Retrievers are renowned for their friendly nature and intelligence, making them a great addition to families. And their golden coats add to their beauty. But before you bring a Golden Retriever puppy home, it’s important to understand their needs, temperament, and what life with them really involves. Read on to know more:

2/7

They are active and need daily exercise

Golden Retrievers are active, friendly, and playful dogs which makes them great companions for people who also have an active lifestyle and for children. They were originally bred for hunting and retrieving (hence the name), and so they have a lot of energy to burn. They love to go on daily walks and have playtime-- which keep them physically and mentally fit. On the other hand, a lack of exercise can make them destructive.

3/7

They shed— A lot!

Considering that Golden Retrievers have beautiful double coats, they are prone to shedding hair all year-round and it gets heavier during spring and fall. This means you'll find fur on your clothes, couch, and even in your food sometimes! And if you have asthma or allergies, you should consider getting hypoallergic dogs as pets instead. As for golden Retrievers, they need regular grooming to manage shedding along with brushing atleast 2–3 times a week to reduce loose hair and keep their coat healthy.

4/7

They are very friendly

Golden Retrievers are known for their affectionate, friendly, and gentle nature-- which makes them a great addition to families with kids. Since they are friendly, they get along well even with strangers and other animals. But this friendliness also means they’re not the best guard dogs! Golden Retrievers love human interactions and can get sad or anxious if left alone for too long.

5/7

They are easy to train-- And it is important too for them

Golden Retrievers are intelligent and eager to please, which makes training them relatively easy. They respond well to positive reinforcement like treats and praise. Basic obedience training should start early to prevent habits like jumping or chewing. Socialising them with people and other pets from a young age is also important to raising a well-mannered adult dog. Even though they’re naturally friendly, training helps them become more confident and less anxious in new environments.

6/7

They need regular health check-ups

Golden Retrievers are prone to certain health issues like hip dysplasia, heart problems, and cancer. And so, regular vet visits, a balanced diet, and daily exercise are all important for them to lead a happy and healthy life. While getting a Golden Retriever pup, ensure to get it from a responsible breeder who screens for genetic conditions. Also, be prepared for long-term care costs, including vaccinations, dental cleanings, and possible medications as they age. A healthy Golden Retriever can live 10–12 years and bring great joy and timeless memories to their humans.

7/7

Common health issues in Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers, like all breeds, are prone to certain health issues. Common problems include hip and elbow dysplasia, which can cause joint pain and mobility issues. They are also at risk for heart conditions like subvalvular aortic stenosis and eye disorders such as cataracts. Golden Retrievers have a high chance of developing skin allergies and ear infections due to their dense coat and floppy ears. Additionally, this breed has one of the highest cancer rates among dogs, especially lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma. Regular checkups and a healthy lifestyle can help manage these risks effectively.
