Why are Guppy and Swordtail fish ideal starter options for new aquarists

Are you thinking of keeping fish as pets but don’t know where to start? Take a look at two of the most popular choices for beginners - Guppy fish and Swordtail fish. Here are the reasons why these fish are the deal starter options for new aquarists:

2/7

What is a Guppy fish

Guppy fish are among the most popular choices for aquarium fish, especially for beginners. They originated in South America and are now found worldwide, including India.
You’ll know a Guppy when you see it - they have a range of vibrant colours and patterns across their body. Guppy fish are believed to bring luck and good fortune to their owners. The ideal conditions for this species are a closed 5-gallon tank with a temperature between 21° to 27°C.

3/7

What is a Swordtail fish

Swordtail fish are another livebearing fish that are an ideal choice for beginners because of their adaptability. Originating from Central and North America, they are known by many different names based on the colour of their body.
Swordtail fish are most commonly orange in colour with a striking white belly. They are a hardy species that are extremely active and live up to 3.5 years. The ideal conditions for Swordtail fish are a 10-gallon tank with a temperature between 21° to 27°C.

4/7

They adapt easily

Swordtail and Guppy are hardy fish that are well suited to a novice aquarist on the basis of their capacity for surviving fluctuating water conditions. Guppy fish are best in water with a pH between 6.8–7.8, while Swordtail fish prefer moderately alkaline water and a wide temperature range. They are both tropical freshwater fish tolerant to low salinity levels and slight changes in water quality, but steady, ideal conditions ensure long-term health.

5/7

They have a diverse diet

Lucky for beginners, both Guppy and Swordtail fish are low-maintenance fish that eat a variety of different foods. They are both omnivorous species with a diverse diet that includes live and frozen food, flakes and pellets. Guppy and Swordtail fish even forage on plant matter and algae growing in the aquarium.

6/7

They have a beautiful appearance

The vibrant appearance of Swordtail and Guppy fish gives them a decorative value to any aquarium. Male Guppy fish are especially flashy with vibrant colours and diversified shapes of fins, and male Swordtail fish possess a sword-like tail fin. Both of these have diverse strains and colour varieties, giving hobbyists many options to select from.

7/7

They are resilient

Swordtail and Guppy fish are long-lived and robust. They require moderate tank capacity and will accept nearly anything to eat. Swordtail fish’s bold nature lets them coexist with larger community fish. Despite their robustness, attention to care, diet, and tank hygiene is essential to their optimal health and longevity.
