How to stop taking things personally and handle criticism

Developing a thick skin and being resilient is an important skill which is much needed for staying strong in a world which is full of opinions and criticism. However, being thick-skinned doesn’t mean ignoring other people's feedback-- especially when it is given in goodwill-- or being insensitive. Instead, it means handling criticism well without letting it hurt your confidence or peace of mind. When you learn to respond calmly instead of reacting, you become emotionally stronger and it helps in maintaining your inter-personal relationships— be it at work, with friends, or with family. So, here we list some powerful tips to be thick skinned and handle criticism like a pro:

2/6

Choose your battles wisely

Not every criticism or remark by others deserves your attention. Sometimes, letting other people’s opinions or views pass by is important for your mental peace. Remember, people often project their inner biases and views to others and it has nothing to do with you-- engaging with them won’t lead you anywhere. Before reacting, ask yourself if this feedback will help you grow or if it’s just noise. Stay focused on important issues as it will save your energy and mental peace.

3/6

Be kind to yourself

When others' criticism stings, it’s easy to turn those harsh words inward. But, what's important in such vulnerable moments is to instead be kind to yourself. Use loving and encouraging language like you would with a dear friend. Remind yourself that it is okay to make mistakes; what's important is how you learn from them. Positive self-talk builds your confidence and softens the impact of negative comments.

4/6

Look for the lesson instead of getting bogged down by other's harsh words

Even when criticism feels rough, it often contains a valuable lesson. So, instead of getting defensive, try to find the lesson you can learn from the feedback and how it can help you become better as a person. Having a growth mindset will make help you have a positive outlook towards life.

5/6

Respond, don't react

Reacting impulsively to criticism can make situations worse. Instead, step back and pause, and collect your thoughts before speaking. This will give you the space to respond calmly and rationally, rather than emotionally and help you avoid saying things you might regret later.

6/6

Stay detached

Sometimes, staying detached is the solution to life's difficult moments. And it can help with not taking others' criticisms personally. Remember, their criticism and harsh words are a reflection of their views and how they are as a person-- and it had nothing to do with you, in most cases. Learn to let go of others' rude comments, and this will save you your mental peace which is more important.
