The real reason behind hanging lemon-chilli at shops and vehicles

The real reason behind hanging lemon-chilli at shops and vehicles

Ever spotted a string of one lemon and multiple chillies hanging from a shop’s entrance or even on vehicles and wondered why it's there? While some may think it’s for decoration, others quickly declare that it's to counter ‘Nazar’. Okay, it’s definitely not just decoration or some random choice-rather, it's a centuries-old practice seen all across India, which has both spiritual symbolism and science-backed reasoning behind it. The simple street-side lemon-chillies actually carry an impressive mix of folklore, psychology, pest control power, and astrology. Must be wondering, how?

A familiar morning scene:

If one wants to see how people’s beliefs are associated with this one single ritual, one should roam around any area filled with roadside shops in the morning. You’ll often see a person carrying numerous lemon-chilli strings in hand, going from one shop to another—a very usual scene. Even for those who may not believe in astrology or science, this ritual offers strong psychological backing. The act of hanging the lemon-chilli string is more like a protective routine, giving people a sense of control and comfort. It’s a simple but powerful way to signal, ‘This space is protected’

Scientifically backed?

As scientifically proven, lemons contain citric acid as the primary acid and chillies contain capsaicin-both of which are strong natural deterrents for insects and small pests. Years back ,the idea of chemical repellents was not so popular. As a result , people used this combination probably as a DIY insect barrier to keep flies and bugs away from homes, shops or food stalls. The vaporous compounds released in the air worked like a primitive but effective pest repellent, especially in India’s hot and humid conditions.

Astrological belief associated with lemon-chili:

In Indian astrology, Shani is believed to bring obstacles and misfortune if not positioned rightly in one's horoscope, and many people hang lemon-chilli strings specifically on Tuesdays and Saturdays to counter Shani’s negative influence. The combination is considered powerful in absorbing negative energy or nazar cast by jealous eyes. The idea is that bad vibes get absorbed by the lemon and chillies, which are thrown away after a week to symbolically throw away the negativity.
This practice has been passed down for generations-there’s no textbook mentions, but through stories, habits, and everyday observation. For many families, it’s not about questioning its logic, but about continuing what elders believed “works.” That’s how oral traditions and rituals live on, silently designing our homes and shops with invisible threads of belief.
