Goddesses in Hinduism

The world of Hindu scriptures and mythologies is as vast as the ocean. It attracts the readers and believers into the deep and captures them into its various aspects. When it comes to feminine deities, these mythologies have almost always showcased them as being fierce, wild and at the same time compassionate. But why exactly are these depicted in this particular way? Here is what Sadhguru has to say about this.

Sadhguru and his thoughts

Sadhguru is a spiritual believer, who offers his thoughts and insights into various aspects and topics of the general world. He took upon the topic of the depiction of feminine deities as being fierce. He tries to explain and give meaning to the essence of these feminine goddesses and how they embody a blend of wilderness and compassion together. These qualities are often considered contradictory in nature but as per the nature and characteristics of the deities these qualities coexist harmoniously.

Wildness of life

Sadhguru says that these Feminine deities exuberate a sense of wilderness and also in the real world the women are often suggested to be wild “really wild.” The idea of being wild here, doesn't actually mean recklessness, but rather it signifies the unrestricted, unapologetic expression of one's innermost nature. This wildness represents the vibrancy and exuberance of existence and helps the feminine to show her passion and grow in her own world.

Fiery and compassionate duality

The deities are shown to be fierce and compassionate both at once which mentioned before is contradictory to each other. As per Sadhguru, this reflects the dual nature of life itself. Life can be unpredictable, anything can happen at any moment in life. This is when you have to learn to embrace the unpredictability which is at the core of the divine power. In a way, fierceness represents the power to protect, and compassion signifies the nurturing aspect.

Devi riding a tiger

The image of Devi riding a tiger is a potent symbol. It is worshipped all over the world. Most of the idols made, also depict this gesture. It showcases that the divine is not something to be controlled or harnessed for one's whims. The tiger, with its untamed spirit, is a perfect metaphor for the uncontrollable force of life. This shows that women should not be controlled, she has her own idea of life.

Life's untamed beauty

Life, like these fierce feminine deities, is a phenomenon to be experienced, not something to be used. It's a reminder that life in its truest form is beyond human manipulation. Life will benefit you only when you embrace it with what it actually is without attempting to control or obstruct its nature.
