Why wine and not any other beverage is used in the Christian Eucharist (Holy Communion)

The Eucharist, or Holy Communion, is at the very heart of Christianity. Believers have gathered over centuries to participate in bread and wine as a reminder of the Last Supper. Why other beverages like water, milk, or some other drink were not chosen and the Church consistently held to the use of wine? The preference is not arbitrary but firmly based on theology, scripture, and tradition.

At the Last Supper, Jesus drank a cup of wine with his followers and directed them that it was "My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28). These words form the foundation of the Eucharist. As Jesus specifically mentioned wine, the early Church is presumed to have received wine as inherent in their earnest perpetuation of his command. Substitution by another drink would, by custom, be a break with the very action Jesus initiated. At the Last Supper, Jesus spoke of, "For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes" (Luke 22:18), which shows wine to be part of celebrating our salvation in the kingdom of heaven

Grapes are fermented and pressed, a process that is supposed to mirror the transformation of believers through Christ's atonement. As bread comes from ground grain and is transformed into something else, wine is a change and transformation. Wine was also originally utilitarian. Water in ancient Mediterranean was often not potable, milk was perishable quickly, and juice went bad quickly as well. It is believed wine, unlike other beverages, might be saved, shared, and included in worship without risk.

For Christians across the traditions, wine is not a substitute for any beverage.
It is a symbol chosen by Christ, sanctified by scripture, and upheld by centuries of devotion. The Eucharist is not a convenience but an act of fidelity to the covenant Jesus made with his disciples. By continuing to use wine, the Church remains anchored in that day in the upper room, uniting believers of all traditions and generations in the same act of remembering.

Every other drink one would have consumed at the time carried other connotations or limitations.
Water was already used in baptism as a sign of purification and new life. Milk was associated with sustenance and growth, but not sacrifice. Beer, historians say, was associated with pagan rituals in most places and thus could not be employed for Christian worship. Grape juice in the form that exists today did not exist in the first century; unfermented juice soon spoiled. It is believed that wine alone managed to combine theological symbolism, biblical continuity, and practical availability.
