By 4.30am, while Chennai still sleeps, some WhatsApp groups buzz with “Reached?” texts, pinned locations, and sunrise plans. From the rocky trails of Tirusulam Hills and St Thomas Mount to weekend escapes to Tada Falls, Nagalapuram Hills, and Yelagiri Hills, Chennai’s hiking and sunrise trekking communities are transforming ordinary weekends into adventures filled with fitness, friendships, and freedom from city fatigue...

‘For many young professionals, these communities offer something far deeper than fitness’“Despite not being known as a hill city, Chennai has slowly built a thriving culture around short treks, beach walks, cycling trails, and sunrise meetups. From catching dawn at Marina Beach and Elliot’s Beach to climbing lesser-known rocky stretches around Tirusulam, Pallavaram, and Thiruneermalai, city residents are discovering that adventure doesn’t always require Himalayan altitudes. For many young professionals, these communities offer something far deeper than fitness — a rare sense of belonging in an otherwise fast-moving urban life,” informs Abhinesh, founder of the Sunrise Seekers Trek community.
'It’s not about the destination anymore; it’s about disconnecting from stress'“Every Friday night, our group votes for a location depending on weather, difficulty, travel time, and who’s joining. Some weekends, we want waterfalls and forest trails like Nagalapuram, while other times we simply climb Tirusulam hill and watch flights take off against the sunrise. It’s not about the destination anymore; it’s about disconnecting from stress and reconnecting with people,” says Mohan Kumar, a college student, who has been part of a city trekking community for nearly three years.
'We’ve explored places even many locals don’t know about'“People assume Chennai has no trekking culture because we don’t have massive mountains nearby. But there are plenty of hidden rocky trails, reserve forest stretches, temple hills, and coastal sunrise spots around the city. We’ve explored places near Thiruporur, Pulicat side, Javadu foothills, and even tiny abandoned quarry trails many locals don’t know about,” shares Pradeep, graphic designer.
