Roads are among the most important parts of global infrastructure, connecting countries, cultures and economies. Certain highways cross continents, turning them into feats of engineering. The list below features the top 10 longest roads in the world is based on their respective approximate lengths.

Trans-Siberian Highway (≈ 11,000 km / 6,800 miles)


The Trans-Siberian Highway runs across Russia from the western part near the city of St. Petersburg to the eastern part close to the city of Vladivostok. The road crosses numerous forest territories and high mountains, and even some extremely distant areas on Earth. The road has extreme climate conditions, which make traveling across it rather difficult, especially during severe winters.

Pan-American Highway (≈ 30,000 km / 19,000 miles)


Perhaps the most well-known road system in the world is the Pan-American Highway, which runs from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (USA) to Ushuaia in Argentina. Spanning 14 nations, the Pan-American Highway links North, Central, and South America in one grand highway system. The highway travels through a variety of terrains, from deserts and mountains, to jungles and even tundra regions. The road is interrupted by the Darién Gap in Panama-Colombia, a rainforest that breaks the link between the two sides.

Highway 1, Australia (≈ 14,500 km / 9,000 miles)

The Australian Highway 1 is a large ring road running along all borders of the country, thus becoming an absolutely unique road system on Earth. The road connects several big cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Darwin, creating a continuous loop called “Big Lap.” Moreover, the road plays a key role in connecting the coast of the country and is considered the longest national highway in one country.

Trans-Canada Highway (≈ 7,800 km / 4,860 miles)

The Trans-Canada Highway is the major artery of Canada's highway system, which stretches from Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, on the Pacific coast, to St. John's, the provincial capital of Newfoundland, on the Atlantic coast. The Trans-Canada Highway travels through all ten provinces of Canada and offers an array of scenery from the mountains to the forests, from the plains to the coasts. This highway is not only one of the longest highways in the world but also one of its busiest routes for transporting goods and people.

The U.S. Route 20 spans from Boston in Massachusetts to Newport in Oregon and is the longest highway in the United States. U.S. Route 20 covers 12 different states and traverses various terrains such as urban areas, farmlands, forests, and mountain ranges.
