From Chris Pratt to Jay Glazer: Stars who swear by the Murph workout
CrossFit Hero WODs are some special workouts which are dedicated to honour military personnel, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other first responders who died in the line of duty. Unlike regular CrossFit workouts, Hero WODs are often longer, more arduous and physically gruelling.
“Murph” is far the best-known Hero WOD.
The workout is named after the US Navy SEAL Lt Michael Murphy. Taylor Kitsch portrayed him in the film Lone Survivor in 2013. The workout now is considered as a Memorial Day tradition within the CrossFit community, with athletes around the world pulling on weighted vests to commemorate Murphy and honour his sacrifice as Men’s Health reported.
It is a workout consisting of activities that are deceptively simple: run 1 mile, complete 100 pull-ups and 300 squats and then finish with another 1-mile run.
The challenge has acted as an official fundraiser for the Lt Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
As reported by Men's Health, the actor is said to complete this workout every year and previously he shared that he finished it by wearing a 20lb vest in 58:17.
He’s also filmed the challenge at Unbreakable Performance in Los Angeles alongside athletes, veterans and fellow celebrities.
He's got global fame and love with his Andy Dwyer character on the TV sitcom Parks and Recreation.
He has tracked Murph multiple times, where there have been shared sessions with Chris Pratt and later Dwayne Johnson.
He wanted to cater encouragement to others for involvement in the Memorial Day weekend through the challenge which he did. It was an act to push Murph beyond the CrossFit community and into the mainstream.
Johnson is reluctant in joining something this high-impact; Murph, regardless he has tracked it in an easier way.
He had completed the challenge at his Iron Paradise gym in Hawaii after being challenged by Krasinski. He described the day as day of “sweat, pain and a few miscounts”.
Zuckerberg has said he takes on the challenge every Memorial Day alongside his daughters, who reportedly completed an unweighted quarter-Murph in just 15 minutes, showcasing the family's shared enthusiasm for fitness.
He is well known for training elite athletes, fighters and Hollywood stars, Glazer is no stranger to intense fitness challenges.
