From Goblin Shark to Glass Frog: 8 real-life animals that seem completely unreal

Nature always has the potential to outdo human imagination. From across oceans, forests, deserts, and isolated islands, there are actual living creatures strange enough to appear mythical. They have adapted to live successfully in rare settings, giving them the appearance of fantasy characters, not actual living organisms. Here are eight actual living creatures that appear unreal.

2/9

Axolotl

The axolotl is a very rare type of amphibian found in Mexico, well known for its “permanently smiling” face. More interestingly, it never grows up like other amphibians, which change from an aquatic to a purely land-dwelling lifestyle. It is truly amazing that it has the capability to regenerate its lost limbs, organs, as well as parts of its brain.

3/9

Goblin shark

Often called a “living fossil,” the goblin shark lives deep in the ocean and has a long, flat snout with an extendable jaw. When hunting, its jaw shoots forward rapidly to capture prey. Its pinkish skin and alien-like appearance make it one of the strangest sharks ever discovered, rarely seen by humans.

4/9

Leaf-tailed gecko

The leaf-tailed gecko is a camouflage specialist found in Madagascar. Its body is like a dead leaf, complete with veins and edges. Such good camouflage allows it to evade predators. When it senses danger, it opens its jaws and displays a brightly coloured inside to surprise its attacker.

5/9

Mantis shrimp

Despite its name, the mantis shrimp is neither a mantis nor a shrimp. It has eyes that are among the most complex in the world. It has the ability to detect polarised light. The claws that it uses to attack have a punch that is speedy enough to shatter shells.

6/9

Saiga antelope

The saiga antelope, found in Central Asia, is instantly recognisable by its oversized, flexible nose. This unusual feature helps filter dust during summer migrations and warm cold air in winter. Its prehistoric appearance and critically endangered status make it one of the world’s most unusual and vulnerable mammals.

7/9

Blue Dragon (Glaucus atlanticus)

The blue dragon is a small sea slug that floats upside down on ocean surfaces. Its striking blue and silver coloration looks unreal, but it serves as camouflage. Even more surprisingly, it feeds on venomous jellyfish and stores their toxins, using them as a powerful defense against predators.

8/9

Aye-Aye

The aye-aye is a nocturnal primate found in Madagascar. It has large eyes and a very long middle finger. This finger is used to tap on the tree to retrieve insects that hide inside the tree. This method of acquiring prey is known as percussive foraging. The aye-aye primate has a unique appearance that qualifies it to be a subject of superstition.

9/9

Glass Frog

Glass frogs are small amphibians, very common in Central as well as South America, wherein they are known for having the most transparent skin. The organs in the body, such as the heart, liver, and intestines, are visible through the transparent abdomen in these frogs. The most remarkable aspect of these frogs is how they appear non-existent while resting on a leaf, even though they are very real.
All these animals demonstrate just how weird nature is compared to fantasy. Over millions of years of evolution, nature has created beings with bodies and attributes that just don’t seem possible. From amphibians’ ability to regenerate, to the hunting strategies of deep-sea animals, to camouflage in reptiles, all these examples show just how different nature is compared to fantasy.
