Dhishkyaon, Whistler, Cappuccino, Chamanlal and Nobita. Are you wondering what are we talking about? Well, these are the names chosen by the city’s pet parents for their furry friends. In an age of photo-sharing and social networking sites, everyone loves to flaunt their share of exclusivity laced with an element of quirky cool attitude. So, the uber cool, chic pet parents giving ‘oh so common’ names like Jimmy, Tommy, Peter and the like a miss and instead settling for funky names that strike a chord immediately.

What’s in a name… lots actuallyIn a bid to show their love, creativity and imagination, most pet parents choose names that are not common. In the same way, pet parents consider their pets nothing less than a family member and to name a pet is an enjoyable creative process.
“I was sure to not give a common name to my pet. It is nice when your pet has a quirky name. On a lighter vein, it also lets people to remember your pets,” says Rupal Ghia, an entrepreneur.
“I fought for two weeks with my husband when he decided to call our five month old Lhasa Apso as Dhishkyaon,” shares Pooja Menon, a banker. She adds, “We were sure to name this little one something different but I wasn’t sure about Dhishkyaon. But as soon as she started reacting quickly to her name, we thought it was a perfect name for her. And this name makes her popular in our social circle.”

Choosing the name
Having a pet is all about love. So, most pet parents choose names that have a more intimate connection with their own lives.
Educator Shruti Garg says, “We are all coffee lovers in my house and so when our pet arrived at our place he was all brown and white. So we thought of naming him Cappuccino.”
Pooja adds, “My husband wanted a Hindi name for our pet dog. He came up with names like Basanti, Ramlal. But then it so happened that our little one used to enjoy the song Dhiskyaon whenever it was played. So, that’s why my husband chose to go with the name Dhishkyaon. It took me sometime to accept this name. But now whenever we introduce her to my friends, her name brings a smile and strikes an immediate conversation.”
Rupal adds, “From the beginning, we as a family are fond of bakery products. That fondness made us name our first dog, a Shihtzu, Sugar. And we made sure to take it forward and I have another Shihtzu called Oreo and Cookie, a Cocker Spaniel.”
So, it’s time to give ordinary a miss and go quirky so far as names of your pets are concerned.
