Top 5 countries that have never been to war

In recent times, where every little trouble between two countries has war alarms ringing in people's heads, you will be surprised to know that there exist countries in the world that have never participated in a war and maintained their policies of peace and non-violence. While the definition of war varies, there are nations that have remained neutral or avoided any direct participation in wars.

2/7

San Marino

Topping the list of countries that have never been to war is San Marino, one of the oldest Republics in the world. Founded in the 4th century, it has an area of 61.2 square kilometres and has fewer than 40,000 residents. The country maintains a neutral stance and protects itself with the help of a small military force.

3/7

Vatican City

A country known for peace and god, is expected not to participate in an act as destructive as war and thus the Vatican City maintains a healthy distance from wars. Located inside Rome, it is the smallest independent state in the world which is the centre of the Roman Catholic Church and has no formal military, relying on the Swiss Guard for ceremonial purposes and following the Pope's path of peace.

4/7

Costa Rica

One of the most exemplary examples of avoiding war stands in the form of a country as modern as Costa Rica. It abolished its army in 1949, following a civil war and vowed to never maintain a military force again, rather investing all its resources in education and healthcare. Since then, it has remained neutral and peaceful, emphasizing diplomacy and international cooperation.

5/7

Switzerland

Did you know Switzerland has avoided wars and maintained neutrality for years? Yes, the country that houses the UN headquarters and supplies the world with the best quality of watches and chocolates established a strict non-intervention stance in terms of war in the Treaty of Paris in 1815. However, while it may not have participated in wars, it maintains a steady defence system and military for national security.

6/7

Iceland

Iceland's unique political structure and strategic isolation aid it in avoiding wars. Located in the North Atlantic, the country has no standing military but is an active member of international organizations like NATO where it maintains a neutral stance.
