European architecture

European architecture has always been a mix of Gothic, Art Nouveau, and other architectural and art elements. There are huge structures, conical towers, giant columns, stained glass windows, patterns that give the perfect reflections, and much more. And so, European buildings and architecture also become top travel destinations for people all the time. Be it the Eiffel Tower, or the Sagrada Familia, the aesthetics and charm of their old-world style has always captivated people.
Here we mention 6 famous architectural wonders one can see in Europe.

2/7

Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is the most iconic, aesthetic, and famous architectural wonders in Europe. Located in Paris, Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous destinations to visit in the world, and was designed by Gustave Eiffel back in 1889. It’s shape, the way it is designed, the colour, the sparkle it has at night, and the icon it has become today, all come together to make Eiffel Tower an architectural wonder.
An amazing, and not much talked about brilliance of the Eiffel Tower is that it reacts with sunlight all through the day. As sunlight falls on the Tower, the patterns of the tower are reflected in the ground in front, giving it a certain aesthetic.

3/7

Colosseum

Italy’s Colosseum is another famous and iconic piece of architecture. Although a little tattered, the Colosseum has maintained its charm among people.
The Colosseum was meant to be a giant viewing hall for the people and could accommodate about 80,000 people at once! And by means of architecture, the Colosseum’s elliptical shape was one of a kind for its time. The outer facade has four levels, with arches supported by columns in different styles. The whole structure in general is detailed, humongous, and simply awe-inspiring.

4/7

Leaning Tower of Pisa

When it comes to architectural wonders, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is an icon! And as evident by the name, the most iconic part of the Tower is its ‘Tilt’. Like a normal tower, it is not upright, or bent, it is tilted a little to a side but still stands fine. It is said that during construction itself the tower began leaning due to unstable ground and poor foundations. And even though attempts were made to correct the lean, it took international efforts to decrease the lean percentage.

Overall, in terms of aesthetics and architecture, the Leaning Tower is made white and grey marble, with arches and columns through the facade, and the circular shape making it one-of-a-kind.

5/7

Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona, is one of the most famous churches in the world. Designed by Antoni Gaudi, the construction for this Church began in 1882, and is still underway!
The inspiration for Sagrada Familia is a mix of Gothic elements and Art nouveau, which gives it an almost other-wordly, fictional look. The structure has towering spires, detailed exteriors, carvings that show biblical scenes, and fluid shapes throughout. In fact, even the interiors are breathtaking of the Sagrada Familia. There are supporting columns that look like tree trunks, ceiling that looks like a forest, stained-glass windows giving the perfect reflections, and more.

6/7

Sistine Chapel

One of the most beautiful, elaborate, and aesthetic buildings in all of the world is the Sistine Chapel. Located in the Vatican, this Chapel has the most stunning frescoes, done by Michelangelo, and is home to some of the most iconic masterpieces of the artist. And while the architecture of the chapel is fairly simple, it is the art that covers the ceiling and walls that makes it one of the most beautiful structures in the world.
From ‘Creation of Adam’, to ‘The Last Judgement’, one can find all of them here.

7/7

Notre Dame de Paris

Notre Dame de Paris, is one of the best, and most beautifully subtle examples of French Gothic architecture. It is massive in size, has spirals and arches that remind one of Gothic influences, a large clock right in the middle of the main tower that was unfortunately destroyed in the 2019 fire, and the stained-glass windows, another classic, gives it a nice, aesthetic touch.
The interiors have vaulted ceilings, towering columns, and depictions of Biblical scenes.
