Talented women who made a mark

Men have forever ruled the art world and have been in the lists of the best artists of history. Vincent van Gogh, Picasso, da vinci, and so many more men have etched their names in history. But, women were forever kept away from the limelight. First they were discouraged from pursuing arts and when they rebelled they were given menial commissions and titles. But, defying all odds there were still women who revolutionised the art world.


Here we list 6 women artists who were a boon to the genre.

​Frida Kahlo

One of the most popular and known female artists in the world is Frida Kahlo. To youth all over, she is the epitome of an icon. Frida is celebrated for her deeply personal and symbolic works and her paintings were a mirror of her suffering, turmoil, and resilience.
Kahlo used art to express her identity, experiences, and emotions and is well-known for her self-portraits, which were a mix of Mexican culture and surrealism. Her works, ‘The Two Fridas’ and ‘Self-portrait with Cropped Hair’ are iconic to say the least.

Amrita Sher-Gil

The pride of India, often called ‘India’s Frida Kahlo’ was Amrita Sher-Gil. She was the woman who completely redefined arts for India and Indian women. Born to a Hungarian mother and an Indian father, Sher-Gil's background influenced her work which was a blend of Western and Indian art traditions.
Her paintings also covered beautiful themes of India. From the joys and calm of everyday life to the portraits of her cousins, self, and friends, Amrita Sher-Gil was a shining star.

​Judith Leyster

One of the most famous women of the Dutch Golden Age was Judith Leyster. In a world where men dominated the canvas, Leyster drew her own career. She was particularly famous for drawing genre scenes, portraits, and still lifes, and paintings were full of energy and fun.
One of her most famous works, ‘The Proposition’, shows a man offering a woman some coins but she doesn't even look at him and continues working in the candlelight.
Leyster was one of the first women to be admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke.

​Artemisia Gentileschi

Another art icon in the list is Artemisia Gentileschi. She is one of the most famous artists of the Baroque era and her paintings are a sight to behold.
Her work is known for its symbolism, her use of chiaroscuro (using light against darkness), and the dramatic intensity of her paintings. Her paintings had strong female characters and one of her most famous paintings was of the biblical scene ‘Judith Slaying Holofernes’. It shows Judith beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes and this painting is the perfect example of Gentileschi's talent, and the power of her art.

​Angelica Kauffman

Another famous name in the art world is Angelica Kauffman. She was a brilliant neoclassical painter and excelled in both music and art. Kauffman's work often features classical themes and her art was majoritarily about history paintings. Paintings of the themes of Bible, mythology, characters, etc. And, Kauffman did it all with a touch of elegance with a keen sense of narrative. One of her most famous paintings is of herself where is divided between choosing music or arts.

​Georgia O’Keeffe

Born in 1887, Georgia O’Keeffe is one of the most famous American artists of the 20th century. She is known for her large-scale paintings of flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. Her paintings feature bold, bright colours, abstract details and beautiful forms. O’Keeffe's flower paintings, such as ‘Black Iris’ zoom in on the subject, and give it a real-like quality, almost like the audience is looking at a flower, not a painting.
