Michelangelo's iconic work

Michelangelo Buonarroti, famously known as Michelangelo, is one of the most celebrated artists of the Italian Renaissance period. Michelangelo, with his skills and talents, left an indelible mark on the world. His work, while deemed controversial by many, is still one of the most viewed and admired all over the world. His mastery of sculpture, painting, and architecture changed the way people saw art and influenced generations of artists.
Here we list 7 of his most iconic arts that entice audience even today.

David

‘David’ is undoubtedly Michelangelo's masterpiece. The statue of David, created with marble stands tall as a symbol of human strength and beauty. Completed in 1504, this grand statue depicts the biblical hero David in a moment of contemplation before his battle with Goliath. Standing over 17 feet tall, David exudes a sense of confidence and determination, captured in the beautiful details of his muscular form and intense gaze.

Ceiling of Sistine Chapel

The ‘Ceiling of Sistine Chapel’ was commissioned by Pope Julius II and Michelangelo spent four years painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which is now one of the greatest masterpieces of Western art. The ceiling frescoes comprise nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, including the iconic depiction of the Creation of Adam, where the outstretched hands of God and Adam almost touch. Michelangelo's techniques, use of colours and detailing in the frescoes are an evidence of his unparalleled artistic genius.

The Torment of Saint Anthony

Painted when Michelangelo was just 12 or 13 years old, ‘The Torment of Saint Anthony’ is one of Michelangelo's earliest surviving works, showcasing his talent as a young artist. This surreal depiction of Saint Anthony's struggle against demonic temptations reflects the influence of Northern Renaissance art on Michelangelo's style. The swirling forms, scary figures and intense use of emotions while painting creates a dark, scary atmosphere, which draws viewers into the saint's spiritual dilemmas.

Pieta

Created by Michelangelo when he was in his 20’s, the ‘Pieta’ is a beautiful, white sculpture of the Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, the Pieta is evidence of Michelangelo's unmatched skill in rendering delicate details and conveying intense emotions even through something as lifeless as a stone. The Pieta's beauty continues to captivate audiences even today.

Doni Tondo

The ‘Doni Tondo’ is a circular painting commissioned by Agnolo Doni, a wealthy Florentine merchant, in 1504. Depicting the Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist, this painting is famous for its innovative use of the tondo format and dynamic arrangement of figures. Michelangelo's mastery of anatomy and composition is evident in the gestures and expressions of the figures, creating a sense of intimacy and movement within the circular frame.
According to the website of Uffizi, “The frame around the painting, probably designed by Michelangelo, was carved by Francesco del Tasso, an exponent of the highest level of the tradition of wood carving in Florence. It shows the head of Christ and those of four prophets, surrounded by grotesques and racemes, in which there are half moons, hidden in the top left section: the emblem of the Strozzi family.”

Moses

Michelangelo's strong and monumental sculpture of ‘Moses’ was intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II but ultimately became part of the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome. Carved from marble between 1513 and 1515, Moses is depicted with horns on his head. Michelangelo's Moses is a commanding figure, who looks full of power and authority through his muscular form and intense expression. The flowing beard and furrowed brow looks absolutely perfect, making Moses a timeless symbol of strength and leadership.

The Last Judgement

Painted on the wall of the Sistine Chapel, ‘The Last Judgement’ is one of Michelangelo's most famous fresco depicting the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgement of souls. Covering an area of over 5,000 square feet, ‘The Last Judgement’ is filled with dramatic intensity, as angels and saints ascend to heaven while sinners are cast into damnation.
Despite there being controversies over its explicit nudity and imagery, ‘The Last Judgement’ remains one of Michelangelo's most famous paintings that continues to captivate audience even today.
