Sadhguru pays tribute to Tabla Maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain
The world mourns the loss today of Ustad Zakir Hussain, a legendary tabla virtuoso. According to reports online Ustad breathed his last on Monday, December 16 in San Francisco, and left behind a legacy of love, respect, exceptional talent, and much more.
Ustad ji was known for his skill and the way he brought an Indian classic instrument, the Tabla, on the world stage.
Ustad Zakir Hussain was born on March 9, 1951, and was the son of the iconic tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha. From an early age, Zakir Hussain showed prodigious talent, training under his father’s guidance, and it was easily identifiable that he had a natural flair for the instrument, a love that knew no bounds, and a talent that was unparalleled.
In fact, according to an old interview, when Zakir Hussain was born his father spoke a Table rhythm in his ear instead of a religious prayer.
Ustad Zakir Hussain had an impeccable rhythm, inventive compositions, and an unparalleled ability to communicate emotion through his instrument. His performances were not just technical or monotonous as one would think a Tabla performance to be, but rather had so much energy and dedication into it that even the most uneventful days would transform to pure happiness and joy. He co-founded Shakti, a groundbreaking fusion band, with guitarist John McLaughlin, blending Indian classical music with jazz, and also collaborated with international icons like George Harrison, Bela Fleck, and Herbie Hancock, creating music that went beyond cultures and genres.
Since yesterday tributes and condolences have been pouring in for the Tabla maestro, and the biggest names of the industry and others are heartbroken by his passing.
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev too shared a note expressing his sadness over the demise of Ustad Hussain. Sadhguru writes “From the fantastic times of fusion in Shakti, Zakir had rhythm in his bones, love for his art in his heart and brought joy to millions across the world. He will always be remembered with love, pride and gratitude for his Devotion to his Art. Deepest condolences & Blessings to all bereaved by his passing.”
