10 most expensive countries for tourists, and how to plan smartly

Travelling the world is a dream many share, but some destinations can be surprisingly heavy on the pocket. One moment you are feeling proud of yourself for embarking on that much-awaited international trip, and the next moment you are at your destination but find yourself in a financial crunch. That’s not a good feeling, ever. However, with thoughtful planning and practical budgeting, even the world’s costliest countries can be explored comfortably. The trick lies in knowing where to spend, and where to save. Here’s a look at 10 of the world’s costliest destinations, and how to make your trip affordable without missing the experience.

2/11

Switzerland

Switzerland consistently ranks among the priciest countries due to its strong currency, high living standards, and premium tourism infrastructure. From train rides to mountain lodges and even a cup of coffee, everything can cost double what you’d pay elsewhere in Europe. So, one way you can help yourself is to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass. This pass allows unlimited access to trains, boats, and buses. Instead of making big cities like Zurich or Geneva your base, stay in smaller towns like Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen.

3/11

Iceland

Remote geography and reliance on imports make things in Iceland costly. Hotels, guided tours, and even groceries can quickly eat into your budget. And sadly, these are also things one cannot do without. So it’s best to visit the country in shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) when accommodation rates drop. Rent a camper van as it covers both transportation and lodging.

4/11

Norway

Norway’s dining, transportation, and lodging prices are among the highest in Europe. Alcohol and eating out are particularly costly due to high taxes. So when in Norway, go for self-catering apartments or Airbnb stays. Explore Norway’s free natural attractions like fjords, mountains, and hiking trails. Consider buying the Oslo Pass or regional travel cards for free public transport and discounts at museums.

5/11

Denmark

Copenhagen, in particular, is one of Europe’s most expensive cities, thanks to its strong economy and emphasis on quality living. Meals, museums, and hotels all carry premium price tags. When in Copenhagen, get the Copenhagen Card, which covers unlimited transport and entry to dozens of attractions. Try local bakeries and street food markets instead of formal dining. Walking and cycling can save both money and time in the city, and many locals do it as well.

6/11

Singapore

Singapore’s efficient infrastructure and strict regulations make it one of Asia’s costliest destinations. Accommodation, alcohol, and transport costs can add up quickly. When in Singapore, the best way to go about this is to use the EZ-Link card for cheaper public transport and dine at hawker centres. There you can get authentic meals for a fraction of restaurant prices. Neighbourhoods like Little India or Chinatown have budget-friendly hostels where one can stay.

7/11

Japan

Japan, while it offers incredible value in terms of quality, is not cheap as a tourist destination. Accommodation in big cities, intercity trains, and entrance fees can be very expensive. So how to navigate this smartly? Purchase a Japan Rail Pass before arrival for unlimited train travel across the country. Stay in business hotels or capsule hotels, which are clean, safe, and affordable. Enjoy convenience-store meals. They serve fresh, budget-friendly food, and they taste good.

8/11

Australia

Travelling in Australia is costly, mostly due to vast distances between destinations. Eating out and city stays in Sydney or Melbourne are also pricey. If you are planning to explore Australia, book domestic flights well in advance and use budget carriers like Jetstar. You can also opt for Airbnbs or campervans if you’re exploring coastal routes. Visit public beaches, national parks, and free walking tours in cities.

9/11

New Zealand

New Zealand, much like its neighbour Australia, is expensive because its isolation increases import costs, affecting everything from fuel to food and accommodation. This one is pretty straightforward. To help yourself a little bit, travel in off-peak months (March–May or September–November). When in New Zealand, rent a car or campervan for flexible, economical travel. If you are staying at hostels, you can cook your own meals. Also, make use of New Zealand’s numerous free scenic trails and natural attractions.

10/11

United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi)

Your Dubai and Abu Dhabi trip can turn stressful in less than a blink of an eye. How, you ask? Well, luxury defines much of the UAE’s tourism, that’s why. From 7-star hotels to high-end shopping and fine dining, everything is glitzy, and the temptation to try them all out, just because you are there, can catch you off-guard. How to plan this smartly? When in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, look for mid-range hotels or serviced apartments in older districts like Bur Dubai or Deira. Use public transport or ride-sharing apps instead of taxis. Many top attractions like beaches, souks, and cultural sites are usually free or low-cost at the most. Visit during summer off-season for significant hotel discounts.

11/11

France

Planning a whirlwind tour of France? The city of Paris alone can devour your budget with high hotel rates, museum fees, and dining costs. Beyond the capital, the French Riviera also comes with a luxury price tag. To make it a little bit affordable, go for neighbourhood stays outside central Paris (like Montmartre or Belleville) and use metro passes for unlimited rides. There are free museum days, take advantage of those days. Instead of eating out, go for a picnic in parks, that’s way cheaper. Also, you can visit smaller towns like Lyon or Bordeaux which offer the French charm at lower prices.
