5 longest rivers and where they are located

Certain rivers are not only bodies of water. They are written in history, defined in culture, and are enshrined in religious texts for some people. They connect countries, mark the lives of millions, and nourish our lands. From rainforests to deserts and mountains to oceans, the world's longest rivers stretch over vast distances. Lets take a look at five of the world's longest rivers and where precisely they are located.

2/6

Nile River, Africa

The Nile is approximately 6,650 kilometers long and is often the longest river in the world. It flows north across 11 countries, such as Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt, before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile supports millions, keeping agriculture, transportation, and daily life going in northeastern Africa's arid regions. Its historical importance dates back to ancient Egyptian civilization.

3/6

Amazon River, South America

The Amazon River is around 6,400 kilometers long and is the second-longest river in the world but with the highest discharge of water. It begins in the Peruvian Andes and passes through Colombia and Brazil to the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon basin supports the most biodiverse rainforest on the planet and is of great importance to global ecology and carbon cycling.

4/6

Yangtze River, China

About 6,374 kilometers long, the Yangtze is Asia's longest and the world's third-longest river. It flows only in China, from the glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea at Shanghai. The river is the hub of China's economy because it provides hydroelectric power, irrigation, and shipping and has the world's largest dam, known as the Three Gorges Dam.

5/6

Mississippi–Missouri River System, United States of America

The meeting of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Jefferson rivers forms this North American system, which stretches approximately 5,971 kilometers. It originates in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and flows southeast to the Gulf of Mexico. The river system is vital for intrastate transportation, agriculture, and industry in the central United States. The river system also played an important part in the development and growth of early American colonies historically.

6/6

Yenisey River, Russia and Mongolia

The Yenisey–Baikal–Selenga river system is approximately 3,487 kilometers long, running from Mongolia across central Siberia and into the Arctic Ocean. It's the world's largest river system that empties into the Arctic and is among the longest in the world. The Yenisey is responsible for much of Russia's hydroelectric power production and supports one of the most inaccessible and rugged environments on Earth.
