India, home to many majestic mountain ranges, offers some of the most stunning yet dangerous mountain passes in the world! These passes are undoubtedly gorgeous but are also notoriously dangerous due to their rugged terrains, extreme weather conditions, and challenging roads.
On this note, let’s have seven of the most dangerous mountain passes in India.

Chang La, Ladakh

Chang La at an altitude of 5,360 meters (17,590 feet) is yet another dangerous pass in India. The pass is noted for its extreme weather conditions and unpredictable weather. The place also ranks among the highest motorable passes in the world. Snowstorms are normal so be careful while planning a trip here.

Khardung La, Ladakh

Khardung La is among the most visited mountain passes in India and every adventure seekers dream. The pass, set at an altitude of 5,359 meters (17,582 feet), is among the highest motorable roads in the world. The pass is a prominent destination for travellers, but it comes with its own set of dangers. The road conditions are often poor, there’s lack of oxygen which can lead to altitude sickness.

Zoji La, Jammu & Kashmir

Zoji La on the Srinagar-Leh Highway is set at an altitude of 3,528 meters (11,575 feet). This pass is considered dangerous because it is prone to landslides. Roads remain shut or blocked by snow during peak winter months, making it an extremely risky route.

Rohtang Pass, Himachal Pradesh

Rohtang Pass, sitting at 3,978 meters (13,051 feet), acts as a prime connection between Manali and Leh. The place is noted for its challenging weather conditions and receives heavy snowfall. The winding roads, coupled with frequent landslides and icy conditions, make this pass dangerous. The altitude can also cause difficulty in breathing, making it a risky pass to cross for many travelers.

Sela Pass, Arunachal Pradesh

Sela Pass, located at an altitude of 4,170 meters (13,680 feet) in Arunachal Pradesh, is infamous for its fog, snow, and harsh weather. The road leading to the pass is narrow and often covered in snow, creating hazardous conditions. Avalanches are common and landslides are common, so beware.

Nathu La, Sikkim

Nathu La at an elevation of 4,310 meters (14,140 feet) is a high-altitude mountain pass on the India-China border in Sikkim. It is treacherous due to the extreme weather. Snowstorms and landslides are normal. Beside, the pass is also subject to political tensions, with restricted access.
