10 most iconic wetlands from around the world

Wetlands are considered some of the most ecologically productive areas in the world. They are known to have many functions in nature, including acting as natural filters for water, buffers against floodwater, carbon sinks, and zones of high biodiversity. Wetlands include delta landscapes of large rivers, highland marshes, and tropical wetlands. These areas have influenced the development of civilisation and many landscapes on earth. Here are some of the top 10 wetlands in the world.

2/11

Pantanal, Brasil, Bolivia, and Paraguay

Pantanal is the biggest tropical wetlands system in the world, bigger than England, and annually inundated by the Paraguay River. It is one of the best places in the world for nature exploration. Jaguars, giant otters, capybaras, caimans, and numerous bird species can be found here. It is easier to view wildlife in the open landscape of Pantanal compared to rainforests, and because of its accessibility, Pantanal is one of the most famous nature spots in the world.

3/11

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Okavango is an unusually inland delta because it occurs when the river flows into the Kalahari Desert instead of the sea. The temporary flooding of dry savannah in Botswana creates a wetland haven of lush vegetation that teems with wildlife such as elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and migratory birds. The delta is known for mokoro canoe safaris and pristine wilderness. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

4/11

Everglades, Florida, US

Dubbed The River of Grass, the Everglades, a wetland in Florida, is a slow-moving ecosystem that cannot be found anywhere else in North America. Endangered species like the Floridan panther, American crocodile, and West Indian manatee thrive in this ecosystem. The Everglades is an important supply of water to South Florida and is a heavily researched wetland globally.

5/11

Danube Delta, Romania and Ukraine

Where the Danube River meets the Black Sea lies one of Europe's most biodiverse regions. The Danube Delta is a maze of reed beds, lakes, and channels that supports over 300 bird species, including pelicans and eagles. Largely untouched, it remains one of the continent's last great wilderness areas and a UNESCO-listed wetland of international importance.

6/11

Sundarbans, India and Bangladesh

The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, sprawled across the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta. This tidal wetland is well-known for its adaptation to saltwater conditions and as a habitat of the Royal Bengal tiger, along with estuarine crocodiles, dolphins, and innumerable bird species. Its intricate network of creeks and islands makes it one of the most dramatic wetlands on Earth.

7/11

Mekong Delta, Vietnam

The Mekong Delta is called Vietnam's "rice bowl". This wetland is shaped by seasonal flooding. The catchment areas of its rivers, canals, and floodplains support millions of people with agriculture and fishing. Busy markets, mangrove forests, and bird sanctuaries make this dynamic landscape a culturally as well as ecologically important region.

8/11

Camargue, France

The Camargue is situated in southern France, and it is one of the most characteristic wetland areas in Europe. It is well known for its pink flamingos, white horses, and black bulls. This area combines salt marshes, lagoons, and marshes. The Camargue is an important part of migratory bird routes that link Europe and Africa and is also one of the few wetlands that support pastoral culture.

9/11

Kakadu Wetlands, Australia

These wetlands form part of the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory and rank among the most valuable environments in Australia. The wetlands feature extensive floodplains created during the wet season and harbour saltwater crocodiles, wallabies, and an incredible range of bird species. The wetlands also have great value to the Aboriginal population, with rock art and culture that dates back for tens of thousands of years.

10/11

Lake Nakuru Wetlands, Kenya

Lake Nakuru Wetlands, which lies in the Great Rift Valley, comprises a shallow lake, whose water is alkaline, flanked by grasslands, forests, and wetlands. The wetland is globally known for supporting large populations of lesser and greater flamingos, which feed on the lake’s algae and give the shoreline its iconic pink hue during favourable conditions. Beyond birdlife, the protected ecosystem within Lake Nakuru National Park provides habitat for black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, and numerous waterbirds.

11/11

Keoladeo National Park, India

Also known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, this man-made wetland in Rajasthan is one of Asia’s most famous bird habitats. It supports thousands of migratory birds each winter, including cranes, storks, pelicans, and geese. Despite its semi-arid surroundings, Keoladeo demonstrates how managed wetlands can become biodiversity hotspots. Winter migratory birds are the star attractions of this wetland.
