One of nature’s strangest musical performances plays out in the Namib Desert, where certain dunes produce deep, booming sounds when the sand shifts. Often described as a low-frequency “roar” or “hum,” this phenomenon occurs when millions of sand grains vibrate together as they slide down steep dune faces. The resulting sound can last for minutes and can be heard several kilometres away.

Within the Namib Desert lies the Namib Sand Sea, a UNESCO-recognised coastal dune region and one of the world’s most iconic fog deserts. The “fog belt” along the coast is fed by the cold Benguela Current, which flows northward along the South-West African coast. This cold current cools sea surface air; when warm, dry air from inland meets the cool, moist air from the ocean, fog forms and is pushed inland by prevailing winds.

Just outside Dakar lies a lake that looks as if it has been filled with strawberry milkshakes. Lake Retba, or Lac Rose, gets its vivid pink colour from a salt-loving microalgae called Dunaliella salina, which produces a red pigment. The salt concentration is so high that swimmers effortlessly float on its surface, similar to the Dead Sea.

The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, most hostile places on Earth. By day, the landscape transforms into a kaleidoscope of neon yellows, greens, and oranges as acidic springs and mineral deposits bubble across the surface. Among the largest salt pans in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans shimmer like mirrors under the African sun.
