10 underrated, less crowded destinations for family getaways in December

There is no time better than December to take a time out and have a wonderful time with family. Winter is already here, when the air is crisp and skies are often clear in most of the places. It won’t be utterly wrong to say that it’s indeed the best time to travel with family. During this month, many destinations come wrapped with a serene charm, and are mostly away from the summer crowds. If you are also among those who prefer quieter experiences over crowded tourist hotspots, here are some of the best places in India that promise memorable family trips with minimal hustle.

2/11

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

If you have been to this place before, we bet the charm of this place is totally different during this month. In December, it feels like stepping into a golden fairytale. It’s during this time when the weather is pleasantly cold, making it perfect for exploring the majestic Jaisalmer Fort, narrow bazaar lanes, and intricately carved havelis. The sand dunes at Sam and Khuri are at their best, cool, breezy, and ideal for camel rides or sunset jeep safaris without the scorching heat. Cultural evenings with folk music and dance feel especially magical under the winter sky.

3/11

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Nestled in the northeastern hills, Tawang is a peaceful haven. Its stunning monasteries, particularly the Tawang Monastery, the second largest in Asia, offer a glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist culture. The chilly December weather can be a bit too much for some, but the way the landscape transforms into a snowy paradise, is a sight to behold. Also, with fewer tourists during this period, families can explore the town and its surrounding valleys in relative solitude.

4/11

Velas, Maharashtra

The Konkan coast village of Velas is well-known for its turtle conservation initiative. December is great to watch Olive Ridley turtles as they come to lay eggs along the peaceful beaches. Away from the typical congested seaside sites, families can take advantage of a variety of educational programs, nature excursions, and peaceful beachside settings.

5/11

Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh

Chitrakoot holds both mythological and natural significance. With calm rivers, waterfalls, and spiritual sites, it offers a serene retreat. Visiting in December ensures cooler weather and a peaceful atmosphere. Families can explore Ramghat, Bharat Milap Mandir, and the scenic waterfalls without navigating through large tourist crowds.

6/11

Hampi, Karnataka

Under the gentle winter light, Hampi's ancient ruins and boulder-strewn scenery are captivating. Unlike peak months, December sees less people, making it simpler for families to explore through the UNESCO World Heritage site. Exploring the Vijayanagara ruins, visiting the Virupaksha Temple, and cycling through the fields may be a calm and educational experience.

7/11

Kausani, Uttarakhand

Often called the “Switzerland of India,” Kausani is known for its breathtakingly beautiful panoramic Himalayan views, sans the crowd pressure of Nainital or Mussoorie. It's indeed one of the best places to visit for families to enjoy cozy stays, tea gardens, and sunrise views over peaks like Trisul and Nanda Devi. And if you ask why December, then it's the time when you get crisp air and clear skies, perfect for morning treks or simply enjoying the snowy peaks from a balcony.

8/11

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Orchha is one of those historical gems in the country that comes complemented with palaces, temples, and cenotaphs lining the Betwa River. It makes for a great place to visit, especially with kids. Visiting in December also means fewer crowds and cooler temperatures ideal for family exploration. Must-visits are the Jehangir Mahal and Raja Mahal which offer glimpses of royal life, while the riverside setting provides quiet spots for relaxation.

9/11

Pangot, Uttarakhand

This is for families who would want a pinch of wildlife in their trips. Pangot is one of those places where people can enjoy birdwatching and nature walks, and December is that time when the ambience feels quieter, and the chilly mornings make the bird calls more distinct. Then there are trekking trails, forest walks, and scenic views of the Himalayas that make this destination both an educational and adventurous retreat.

10/11

Vagamon, Kerala

From South India, we have this beautiful place, which is a quieter, less-touristy hill getaway. As in winter, the temperature here remains cool throughout December, whereas the pine forests and rolling meadows offer people the ideal misty, winter feel. Explore the long ridges of Vagamon, dotted with small lakes and cliffs, and make your slow mornings relaxed and rejuvenating, along with scenic walks. Vagamon Meadows, Thangalpara, and Pine Valley make lovely winter stops, especially if you want a calm break without the rush of crowds.

11/11

Dholavira, Gujarat

This is for all those seeking a combination of two things in one place. So, added this place which offers a blend of history and desert charm. Its significance lies in its advanced water conservation systems, well-preserved ancient city, and its unique location in the Rann of Kutch. The archaeological site of this ancient Harappan city is fascinating for older children and adults alike. December offers mild weather, making the ruins easier to explore. Unlike the crowded Rann Utsav, Dholavira remains largely undisturbed.
