18 must-visit spots to soak it all in Ooty, Coorg, and Coonoor

The southern hills of India are not just about finding peace, but they also come with a side of panoramic drama. You chase clouds in Ooty, get caffeinated in Coorg, or swoon over valleys in Coonoor. In short, you have a hill town here for every mood. And if you're the kind of traveller who hates FOMO, here's your cheat sheet: 6 must-visit attractions in each. Bookmark it, screenshot it, so that you don’t miss the best ones.

2/5

Ooty

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Chug along on a toy train, which was built in 1908 and now a UNESCO World Heritage gem. It’s Ooty’s most scenic rollercoaster ride.

Ooty Lake

Rent a paddle boat, feed some ducks, or just sit and judge other paddlers. Bonus: Cotton candy and roadside corn never taste as good as they do here.

Government Botanical Garden

Got a thing for oddly shaped trees and 1000+ plant species? Walk through manicured green heaven and meet a 20-million-year-old fossil tree while you’re at it.

Doddabetta Peak

Highest point in the Nilgiris. Translation: selfie with clouds, chill winds, and “I can see my house from here!” vibes.

Thread Garden

Everything here—flowers, leaves, stems—is made entirely of hand-wound thread. No kidding. It's weird. It’s wonderful. It’s oddly satisfying.

Chocolate shops

Technically not a place, but let’s be real: you’re not leaving without homemade fudge and rum-filled truffles from King Star or Modern Stores.

3/5

Coorg

Abbey Falls

Trek a little, gasp a lot. Abbey Falls is nature’s version of white noise. Visit just after the rains and prepare for goosebumps.

Raja’s Seat

This garden lookout was once the chill zone of Coorg's royals. Today it’s your sunset Instagram reel waiting to happen.

Dubare Elephant Camp

Where you can feed, bathe, and chat (kind of) with elephants. Ethical, interactive, and adorable—what more do you want?

Coffee Estates Tour

Smell roasted dreams and learn how your morning savior is grown, picked, and brewed. Bring back beans, and you’ll never drink instant again.

Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple)

A slice of Tibet in Karnataka. Intricate murals, golden statues, and monks in maroon robes—it’s serene, surreal, and very photogenic.

Madikeri Fort

History, along with views. Yes, you get that here. Built in the 17th century and upgraded by Tipu Sultan, this fort now houses a museum. Because why not?

4/5

Coonoor

Sim’s Park

Less park, more botanical party. Over 1000 plant species and the perfect place for a slow morning stroll or spontaneous picnic.

Lamb’s Rock

It’s not an actual lamb, but you’ll still feel warm and fuzzy. This cliffside viewpoint gives you wide-angle Nilgiri shots minus the Ooty crowds.

Dolphin’s Nose

No dolphins involved—just a cliff shaped like one. Come for the view, stay for the wow. You’ll see Catherine Falls on a clear day.

Highfield Tea Factory

Love tea? Tour this factory to learn how it goes from leaf to cup. Plus, the free tastings are the adult version of a candy store.

Law’s Falls

Hidden, hush-hush, and hugely underrated. This waterfall feels like a personal discovery. Pack snacks and thank us later.

Toy train ride to Ooty

It’s a highlight. The ride between Coonoor and Ooty is short, scenic, and packed with tunnels, bridges, and cinematic charm.

5/5

The must-visit trips

Coorg’s got the caffeine, Ooty brings the best views, and Coonoor is the quiet alternative. Do them one at a time or spread them out in a week-long hill-hopping trip. Either way, these towns are just love.
