5 ghost towns in India that will give goosebumps!

India’s ghost towns are not just abandoned places; they are steeped in mystery, folklore, and history. These places are for those who are interested, semi-abandoned or abandoned communities that were formerly thriving and inhabited, but are now deserted communities. From eerie ruins to unsettling legends, these locations are perfect for travelers seeking an adventurous and spine-chilling experience. Here are five of the most haunted ghost towns in India that you can visit, if you dare.

2/6

Kuldhara, Rajasthan

This list has to include Kuldhara, situated 18 km from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, which is known for its haunting ruins and mysterious history. Once a prosperous Paliwal Brahmin village, it was suddenly abandoned in the 19th century, and its inhabitants are said to have vanished overnight. Legend has it that the village was abandoned in order to flee the brutality of a local minister. While it may seem unnerving to see abandoned houses and crumbling temples everywhere you go nowadays, many people have also claimed to have seen paranormal activity. Come here at your own peril.

3/6

Ross Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

This place once served as the British administrative center in the Andaman Islands, which is now a haunting ghost town. It was a thriving community with a church, bakery, and other amenities during British administration. But the island became a forgotten ruin after being occupied by the Japanese during World War II and then abandoned. The ruins of colonial structures, now overtaken by nature, has a mystery surrounding it, which is further complemented by the creepy ambiance of the island.

4/6

Lakhpat, Gujarat

The ancient town of Lakhpat, which was once a bustling port, is situated in Gujarat's Kutch area. A severe earthquake in 1819 changed the flow of the Indus River, which caused the town to fall after it had flourished in the 18th century. As time passed, the once vibrant area was eventually abandoned, transforming into a ghost town. One can opt to explore remnants such as the fort and several allegedly haunted graves. The isolation and stark beauty of Lakhpat make it an intriguing destination for thrill-seekers.

5/6

Bhangarh, Rajasthan

Bhangarh, located near Alwar in Rajasthan, is infamous for its haunted reputation. Built in the 16th century, the fort was abandoned after a tragic series of events, including the untimely death of its ruler, Raja Madho Singh. As per the local legend, the place was cursed by a sorcerer, and it’s said to be haunted by the spirit of a princess. Visitors have reported strange occurrences, such as unexplained sounds and a sense of unease, especially at night. The Archaeological Survey of India has even placed a warning board near the fort advising against visiting after dark.

6/6

Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu

Before a hurricane in 1964 totally wrecked it, Dhanushkodi, a prosperous town near the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, was devastated. After the terrible event, the town—which included homes, schools, and a train station—was never rebuilt. The town is still in ruins as of right now, with damaged buildings scattered throughout. Dhanushkodi is a haunted spot because of the eerie silence and the recollections of the tragedy that struck the town. The ocean, natural isolation, and mystical surroundings all add to Dhanushkodi's mystique.
