5 hidden gems in Jodhpur that aren’t tourist traps – explore the 'Blue City' like a local

Jodhpur, the famed Blue City of Rajasthan, is more than its majestic Mehrangarh Fort and lively markets. Beyond the familiar lies a world of hidden gems: ancient stepwells, desert trails, artisan hubs, and serene escapes that showcase its culture and natural charm. Exploring these offbeat spots reveals Jodhpur’s true spirit, offering travellers a richer, more personal experience.

Let’s look at some places here:

2/6

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The desert park features ecologically restored desert and arid land vegetation. One can also witness volcanic rock and sandstone formations around the park. The park contains ecologically restored desert and arid land vegetation. There is a visitor centre with an interpretation gallery here, along with a plant nursery, a small shop, and a café. Visitors can also take tours along the park through the four trails, and guides and naturalists are present to guide them around the park. There are around 200 species of birds here and some mammal species as well.

3/6

Toorji Ka Jhalra Stepwell

A famous spot that was built in the 18th century by the queen of Jodhpur, Maharani Toorji. This stepwell was built to keep up with the tradition of constructing stepwells or step ponds by the queens or royal ladies. Its seven stories feature various designs, from the upper well’s carved stone and marble arches to the intricate stone carvings on the walls. This place also holds great cultural significance. Toorji ka Jhalra is the perfect place for some tranquil time away from the hustle of the city.

4/6

Khichan Village

Also a Ramsar site wetland located in the Phalodi Tehsil district of Rajasthan, Khichan Village is greatly known for the large number of migratory demoiselle cranes that fly here every winter. The desert village also hosts a great variety of flora and fauna. Khichan Village provides a habitat for over 150 species of birds and is the perfect spot for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Khichan offers visitors a chance to experience authentic village life away from city life.

5/6

Umaid Heritage Art School

Visitors can witness traditional Rajasthani art at the Umaid Heritage Art School in Jodhpur. It is the perfect hidden gem for art enthusiasts, offering a more hands-on experience of the artistic heritage of the region. Visitors can witness a variety of art forms here, from miniature painting to block printing. The school conducts workshops and art lessons, enabling visitors a participative way to engage with local art traditions beyond typical cultural sightseeing.

6/6

Balsamand Lake and Palace

Balsamand Lake is a popular picnic spot that was designed as a water reservoir to provide water to Mandore. This lake was built by Balak Rao Pratihar in 1159 AD, who belonged to the Kshatriya community. Located on the Jodhpur-Mandore road, it offers serene waters and lush green gardens. There is also a Balsamand Lake Palace here, which was built as a summer palace and houses a variety of trees such as mango, papaya, pomegranate, guava, and plum.
