The very name “Sahasralinga” means the “thousand lingas.” These are traditionally said to have been created during the Vijayanagara era under the patronage of some local king as an act of dedication. Many of the lingas are accompanied by carvings of Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull. During the monsoon, the river partially submerges the lingas. While it is not a temple in the traditional sense, Sahasralinga is undeniably a sacred Shaivite site.
