5 markets in Kolkata that are a street shopper's paradise

Kolkata, a city rich in cultural heritage and lively energy, shines through the markets located here. From colonial-era bazaars like New Market with grand Victorian architecture to the historic wholesale lanes of Burrabazar, there has been a great evolution of the markets here that reflect the culture and tradition over centuries. Tourists can witness the wide variety of handicrafts, jewelry, and street food available in these markets throughout the year, making every visit a truly memorable experience.

Let’s take a look at them:

2/6

New Market (Sir Stuart Hogg Market)

New Market, formally named Sir Stuart Hogg Market, is a market complex located in Kolkata on Lindsay Street at Dharamshala. There are around 2,000 stalls that sell everything from clothing and luggage to electronics and cheese. Tourists must visit here to buy items like garments & accessories, flowers, different food items, crockery, and floral arrangements. One can visit here between 10 am to 8 pm from Monday to Friday and until 7 pm on Saturdays. The food hall is legendary, with historic confectioners like Nahoum & Sons dating to 1902, known for rich fruit cakes and other treats.

3/6

Gariahat Market

Gariahat Market, located at the intersection of Gariahat Road and Rashbehari Avenue in South Kolkata, is considered one of the best Kolkata shopping markets and has a diverse variety of shops. It is mainly famous for its Bengal cotton sarees and gold jewelry. Gariahat also offers fashion jewelry, electronics, home goods, and a fish market. With upscale boutiques alongside lively street stalls, it draws both locals and tourists seeking ethnic wear or window shopping.

4/6

College Street

A long street in Central Kolkata, also known as ‘Boi Para’. College Street houses many universities and colleges and also hosts the iconic Indian Coffee House. This bustling market is the largest book market in India as well as Asia, and it is also the largest second-hand book market in the world. The market gets its name from the various small and big bookstores, which give it the nickname Boi Para, the colony of books. Tourists can get many new and old books here.

5/6

Hatibagan Market

One of the largest markets in Kolkata, Hatibagan Market has two sectors—inner and outer. It is set within a bustling locality known greatly for its vibrant street life and has around 1,500 shops that sell beautiful Bengal saris, vegetables, fish, and household items. The market spreads beyond the market area to the footpaths as well. Hatibagan Market holds great cultural heritage as it has vendors from diverse backgrounds.

6/6

Burrabazar

A lively market that mostly deals with household goods such as spices, textiles, and electronic goods as well as religious ornaments. Tourists must also visit the food stalls here and delve into some delicious street food such as samosas, chaat, and laddu sweets. Burrabazar is separated into highly specialised sub-markets, such as Dhotipatti, Fancypatti, Tulapatti, Chinipatti, etc. Burrabazar’s network of lanes, crowded shops, and centuries-old merchant houses showcase Kolkata’s historic trading legacy and multicultural bustle.
