5 most walkable cities to explore in 2026

As travellers increasingly seek immersive, sustainable and human-scaled urban experiences, the ability to explore a city on foot is becoming a top priority for 2026 itineraries. A recent walkability index by travel portal Skyscanner analysed dozens of up-and-coming destinations around the world, taking into account distances between attractions, safety, air quality, elevation and the number of walking trails, to identify the most pedestrian-friendly cities for travellers. Here are five standout cities where you can truly discover the culture, history and local scene at a relaxed pace, simply by walking.

2/6

Córdoba, Spain

Located in the center of Andalusia, Córdoba comes top in Skyscanner’s walkability chart due to its compact historical center and rich architectural heritage. This former Roman city and Islamic cultural center boasts streets that are perfect for walking. Its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is fully accessible, with iconic landmarks such as the breathtaking Mezquita-Cathedral within walking distance. Just about 26 minutes of walking connects major attractions, more than 29 walking trails help you uncover hidden corners, and the city’s walkable layout allows you to move seamlessly between heritage sites, plazas, tapas bars and local markets.

3/6

Nagasaki, Japan

On the Japanese island of Kyushu, Nagasaki blends natural harbour views with profound historical legacy, and does so in a compact, pedestrian-friendly form. Skyscanner’s index highlights its gentle topography, safety and the relatively short distances between sights as big reasons it’s ideal for walking explorations. Nagasaki’s moderate elevation and well-connected streets make walking easy. The city scores highly for safety and number of attractions reachable by foot.

4/6

Hiroshima, Japan

Another Japanese favourite on the list, Hiroshima pairs powerful history with a pedestrian-friendly city centre. It’s easy to traverse on foot, making it perfect for travellers who like to pace their explorations. All major attractions are connected through walkable streets, about 41 minutes of total walking. A wide variety of memorials, museums and parks are spread out in accessible clusters. When in Hiroshima, take a reflective stroll through Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and don’t miss the local food scene.

5/6

Reggio Calabria, Italy

Reggio Calabria offers travellers a seaside city break with the ease of exploration that few urban destinations can match. Separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina, it pairs calm waterfront promenades with cultural sites and Mediterranean views, all within a brief walkable radius. According to Skyscanner’s walkability data, you can wander between the city’s main sights, including the picturesque waterfront, the striking Rabarama statue and the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, in just about 25 minutes on foot and roughly 2,321 steps.

6/6

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Often associated with glitz, casinos and Formula 1 glamour, Monte Carlo also tops walkability charts for 2026 thanks to its compact size and pedestrian-friendly layout. With the entire city covering less than one square kilometre, almost everything, from museums to harbourside promenades, can be experienced on foot. Major attractions are within mere minutes on foot, despite some steep streets, and beautiful harbour views, designer boutiques and gardens make walking a stylish way to explore.
