5 national parks in India that are a part of iconic elephant reserves

India’s wild elephants don’t live within neat park boundaries. They move across forests, grasslands, river valleys, and human landscapes following migration routes that are centuries old. To protect these vast movements, India created Elephant Reserves under Project Elephant, large conservation landscapes that often include multiple national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and reserve forests. These national parks are not isolated attractions; they are critical pieces of vast elephant landscapes. Going to them is to see conservation done on a large scale, where wildlife roams freely, and nature exists beyond the boundaries of humans.
For the traveller, this means experiences that are thrilling, humbling, and unforgettable.

Bandipur National Park – Nilgiri Elephant Reserve

Bandipur National Park is an integral part of the Nilgiri Elephant Reserve, which is the first and largest elephant reserve of the country. Situated in the state of Karnataka, Bandipur offers the best habitat for large herds of elephants due to the prevalence of dry deciduous forests and river valleys. Bandipur, however, offers the best experience for tourists, as they get to see these animals frequently and experience thrill and drama. In Bandipur, one can easily spot the elephants in large herds, crossing the road, drinking water from the waterhole, and resting in the open clearings, which can be witnessed during any of the safaris.

3/6

Nagarhole National Park – Mysore Elephant Reserve

Nagarhole is part of the Mysore Elephant Reserve, a vital component in the elephant conservation network of southern India. Characteristic features are the thick forests and serpentine rivers. The park continues to support one of the highest densities of elephants throughout the year. The safaris take one through thick vegetation where suddenly an elephant may appear at close range. The banks of rivers are places where often herds can be found, cooling off or feeding, thus providing sights that can be etched in one's memory.

4/6

Mudumalai National Park – Nilgiri Elephant Reserve

It lies at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala and forms an important link in the Nilgiri Elephant Reserve. It functions as both a habitat and a migration corridor, making elephant movement here constant and dynamic. Travellers often witness elephants crossing forest roads or moving between forest patches in organised groups. The park’s varied terrain, grasslands, riverine forests, and scrub, means sightings can range from distant panoramic views to sudden, close encounters.

5/6

Similipal National Park – Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve

Similipal National Park, part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve in Odisha, forms one of eastern India’s most important elephant landscapes. Unlike the crowded national parks in central India, Similipal National Park appears vast, rugged, and unexplored. The movement of these elephant herds through the sal forests, waterfalls, and hill tops covers considerable distances in the national park. The elephant safari appears distant and unrefined, but they do give a glimpse into the lives of these elephant herds in a land that appears relatively undisturbed by the demands of mass tourism.

6/6

Kaziranga National Park – Kaziranga - Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve

Kaziranga National Park is a vital segment of the Kaziranga-Karbi-Anglong Elephant Reserve in Assam. This reserve is located within the Brahmaputra floodplains, which are responsible for the migration of a large number of elephants from the higher grounds to the grasslands during the particular season. Elephant spotting within Kaziranga is quite thrilling as these creatures move through the tall elephant grass or across the floodplains, which are affected annually due to the monsoon rains. For the tourists, the experience is quite fascinating.
