7 breathtaking and epic viewpoints in the Nilgiris and Kodagu

Sometimes, the best part of travel is doing absolutely nothing, or without any fixed itinerary. This allows us to go with the flow and pick up things to do on the go. No matter what your itinerary looks like, staring at a view that makes your heart skip a beat is something that is done naturally. If at any point of time, you feel like setting out on one such trip, try Nilgiris and Kodagu (Coorg), where the air smells of eucalyptus and coffee, and the hills are breathtakingly beautiful. Your views will be misty, majestic, and where you can opt to just relax. These 8 handpicked viewpoints are the kind that’ll stay with you long after you are back to your cubicle.

2/8

Doddabetta Peak, Ooty, Nigiris

Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris, offers sweeping views of the mountain ranges and distant valleys. When here on a clear day, one gets a chance to spot the plains of Coimbatore in one direction and the greenery of the Western Ghats in another. Make sure you check out the telescope house, which will add some vintage charm to the already cinematic setting.

3/8

Raja’s Seat, Madikeri, Coorg

This place once served as the royal retreat of Kodava kings, Raja’s Seat is now everyone’s go-to viewpoint in Madikeri. The name might be regal, but the vibe is relaxed. Set in a manicured garden, this spot serves up lush valley views with dollops of mist. Add in a beautiful sunset and a cup of Coorgi coffee, and you’ll understand why everybody is in awe of this place.

4/8

Nagarhole Forest Viewpoint, Kodagu

On the fringes of the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve lies a forest viewpoint that feels like a secret. Here, it’s not just about the view, it’s the anticipation. Wild elephants, deer herds, and the occasional peacock strut through the forests below. Add layers of morning mist and birdsong, and you know you have the best view to yourself.

5/8

Dolphin’s Nose, Coonoor, Nilgiris

It’s a cliff that juts out in the shape of one. From Dolphin’s Nose, you’ll get a dramatic view of Catherine Falls cascading into the valley below, surrounded by tea gardens and forests. On fog-free mornings, it’s nothing short of a fantasy come to life. And yes, bring binoculars!

6/8

Mandalpatti Viewpoint, North Coorg

Accessible by a short ride or a rewarding trek, Mandalpatti is one of Kodagu’s crown jewels. Located deep inside Pushpagiri Reserve Forest, it offers panoramic views that feel straight out of a movie. Clouds often drift below you, and during sunrise or sunset, the hills seem dipped in gold.

7/8

Ketti Valley Viewpoint, Ooty–Coonoor road

Sometimes called the “Switzerland of South India,” Ketti Valley is one of the largest inhabited valleys in the world. This viewpoint along the Ooty–Coonoor road is an easy detour and a fantastic pit stop. Rolling hills, toy trains chugging by, and hamlets tucked into folds of green, a slow-travel postcard in motion.

8/8

Lamb’s Rock, Coonoor, Nilgiris

Just a short drive from Coonoor, Lamb’s Rock offers a cliff-edge view of the Coimbatore plains and tea estates that tumble down the hillside. The viewpoint itself feels like a balcony above the world. Come for the view, stay for the breeze, and the chance to sip fresh Nilgiri tea nearby while staring into forever.
