7 wildlife sanctuaries in the Western Ghats worth the hike

If you thought the Western Ghats were just a pretty backdrop to your monsoon road trips, think again. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is basically India’s answer to the Amazon. Stretching over 1,600 km and complemented with rich biodiversity, the Ghats are home to forests where the trees whisper, and the big cats wander. Here are seven wildlife sanctuaries in the Western Ghats that are totally worth breaking a sweat for.

2/8

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

Nestled in Thekkady, Periyar is rich in wildlife, well-maintained, and always in the spotlight. Here, you can spot elephants playing in water, bison lurking, and if you're lucky, a tiger giving you the side-eye. Bonus: the boat safari here is less "Indiana Jones" and more "National Geographic” types.

3/8

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka

This sanctuary near Chikmagalur offers a balanced recipe of adventure and tranquility. From coffee estates to the call of the Malabar whistling thrush, Bhadra is underrated and proud of it. Take a safari and keep an eye out for gaurs, crocodiles, and the rare sight of tourists actually being quiet.

4/8

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu

This one's a mouthful, but worth learning to pronounce. Kalakkad Mundanthurai is the second-largest protected area in Tamil Nadu and a treasure trove for serious wildlife enthusiasts. Apart from the elusive tigers, the sanctuary is home to lion-tailed macaques, flying squirrels, and researchers who haven’t seen civilisation in weeks.

5/8

Silent Valley National Park, Kerala

Despite its name, Silent Valley is anything but quiet. This park is a living, breathing rainforest, with lion-tailed macaques swinging like acrobats and over 1,000 species of flowering plants in constant bloom. It’s untouched, mysterious, and almost eerily pristine. There are no jeeps roaring through this one; just you, the trail, and nature humming in perfect pitch.

6/8

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka

Dandeli is where wildlife spotting meets adrenaline-pumping activities like white-water rafting and kayaking—yes, in the same forest! It’s home to black panthers, hornbills with serious punk-rock crests, and enough snakes to make Indiana Jones nervous. Plus, the forest looks like it’s misty, yet endlessly photogenic.

7/8

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

Surrounded by the Idukki Arch Dam and dotted with water bodies that mirror the sky, this sanctuary is a gem tucked between Kuravan and Kurathi hills. It’s the ultimate chill zone for elephants, sambar deer, and jungle cats. The vibe here? Think spa retreat for wildlife, complete with birdsong therapy and mist-covered mornings. It’s also one of the few places where you might spot a herd of elephants gently sipping from a lake, completely ignoring you.

8/8

Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu

Also known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, Anamalai is a wild patchwork of dense jungle, tribal hamlets, and some serious predator-prey drama. This reserve is huge—tigers, leopards, civets, and over 500 species of birds roam free, and sometimes very close. You’ll also find elephants blocking roads, and gaurs flexing muscles. And the best part? It's right next to charming hill stations like Valparai, so you can chase leopards by day and sip hot cocoa by night.
