How to spend 5 days in Madhya Pradesh: The perfect Orchha–Khajuraho itinerary

If your idea of a vacation includes royal ruins, beautiful temples, riverside forts, and barely any Wi-Fi bars in sight, congratulations, you’re in for an offbeat Madhya Pradesh masterclass. Presenting: the 5-day Orchha-Khajuraho combo, a travel plan that starts in Jhansi and serves history, heritage, and holy wow in equal measure.

2/6

Day 1: Jhansi → Orchha

Hop off your train at Jhansi and leave Rani Lakshmi Bai’s valiant battlefield behind, because just 18 km away lies Orchha, the hidden gem that’s waiting to be explored. Check into one of the heritage hotels or riverside retreats and get ready to be hit by some serious time-travel vibes. Start with a lazy stroll through the Orchha Fort complex, where Mughal and Rajput architecture stand tall. Don’t miss the Jahangir Mahal that was built to host the Mughal emperor Jahangir.
End your day by watching the sunset over the Betwa River, where ancient cenotaphs (chhatris) reflect on the water like a royal family reunion.

3/6

Day 2: Orchha

Today’s a mix of spiritual chills and offbeat thrills. Start at the Ram Raja Temple, where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king, not a deity. He even has a palace, guards, and a daily routine. Only in Orchha. If you're up for something scenic, rent a bike or just wander through the sleepy lanes to stumble upon ruins hiding behind trees and temples echoing forgotten chants.
Don’t miss the evening light and sound show at the Orchha Fort Complex — it’s like history class, but way cooler and with mood lighting.

4/6

Day 3: Orchha → Khajuraho

Fuel up and hit the road to Khajuraho, a 4–5 hour drive (if you like to halt at places) that winds through villages, cows, and that random chai stall. Once in Khajuraho, check into a comfy hotel and get ready for some temple tourism like you’ve never seen before. No, seriously. These temples are world-famous for their intricate carvings, and yes, the erotic sculptures are very much a thing.

5/6

Day 4: Khajuraho

Today’s your deep-dive into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khajuraho Group of Monuments. Split into Western, Eastern, and Southern groups, the temples are jaw-dropping in craftsmanship, storytelling, and sheer stone wizardry.
Start with the Kandariya Mahadev Temple — it’s the largest and most detailed, with a spire that looks like a cosmic mountain of gods. The symmetry, the curves, the storytelling in stone , all on point.
In the afternoon, switch gears at the Raneh Falls or the Panna National Park (if you’re up for a quick safari). Nothing like spotting a tiger after a temple trip.

6/6

Day 5: Khajuraho

Use your final morning to shop for local handicrafts, silver jewelry, or mini sandstone replicas of the temples (safe for the living room shelf, we promise).
Catch your train, flight, or road ride back with a camera full of ancient art, fort sunsets, and road trip snacks — and maybe just a little more respect for India’s unsung, unapologetically majestic heritage towns.
So skip the usual suspects. Orchha and Khajuraho are waiting — and they’ve got stories to tell.
