Khajuraho to Mandu: 6 must-visit architectural marvels in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh really feels like the heart of India. Wherever you go, you’ll find history all around– old forts, temples, palaces, and monuments with their own stories. The state has a special charm that mixes the old and the new.

From the detailed carvings of Khajuraho to the calm beauty of Sanchi and the old ruins of Mandu, every place is different. Some are big and grand, others are peaceful and quiet. Traveling across Madhya Pradesh feels like walking through different time periods of India’s past.

Here are six amazing buildings and monuments that show the beauty of Madhya Pradesh.

2/7

Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Khajuraho

Khajuraho is famous for its temples, but Kandariya Mahadev is the most special. Built in the 11th century for Lord Shiva, it’s full of carvings of gods, dancers, musicians, and everyday people. Its tall spire looks like it reaches the sky, and if you look closely, you can see tiny details everywhere. You can imagine how long it took the artists to make it. The temple looks even more beautiful at sunrise and sunset when the sunlight lights up the carvings.

3/7

Jahangir Mahal, Orchha

Jahangir Mahal in Orchha mixes Rajput and Mughal styles. It has three floors, domes, arches, and balconies– big and beautiful, but not too much. The red sandstone shines in the sun, and there’s a small fountain in the courtyard. From the terrace, you can see the Betwa River flowing slowly below. It feels calm, like time has slowed down. You can spend a long time exploring its corners, and every spot gives a peaceful view of Orchha.

4/7

Sanchi Stupas

Sanchi is quiet and peaceful. The Great Stupa, built by Ashoka, holds relics of Buddha. Smaller stupas and monasteries surround it, and the carved gateways, called toranas, tell stories from hundreds of years ago. Walking here, you can imagine pilgrims moving slowly, deep in thought. Even today, it’s a calm place where you can sit, think, and enjoy the quiet.

5/7

Jai Vilas Palace, Gwalior

Jai Vilas Palace, built in the 19th century by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia, shows European-style grandeur. Each floor has a different design, but the Durbar Hall is the most stunning with chandeliers, gold, and crystals everywhere. Part of the palace is now a museum, with old furniture, artifacts, and vintage cars. Walking through it, you can feel the wealth and lifestyle of the old rulers. The palace is so well kept that it feels like the royals could still be living there.

6/7

Jahaz Mahal, Mandu

Jahaz Mahal seems to float between two lakes. Built in the 15th century, it was part harem, part leisure place. Its arches, balconies, and pools make it look delicate and beautiful. At sunset, its reflection in the water is amazing. The cool breeze and calm water make it a perfect place to relax. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Mandu for a reason.

7/7

Mandu

Mandu sits on the Vindhya hills and used to be the capital of the Malwa Sultanate. Palaces, mosques, and ruins are found all over the city. Places like Hindola Mahal, Hoshang Shah’s Tomb, and Baz Bahadur’s Palace each tell their own story. The love story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati adds a touch of romance. Surrounded by greenery, it’s a place where you can easily forget time.
