Revealed! India’s top surfing destinations for adventure enthusiasts

It’s true that surfing in India is still developing, but these locations stand out for their natural conditions and growing communities. These hotspots benefit from India’s extensive coastline along the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, with the southwest monsoon (June to September) bringing the best swells to the west coast. The east coast sees action during the northeast monsoon (October to December).

2/9

Varkala, Kerala

Located along the Arabian Sea, Varkala is widely regarded as one of India’s premier surfing destinations. Its consistent waves, especially around Varkala Beach, attract both beginners and experienced surfers. The scenic cliffs and laid-back vibe add to its appeal. Interestingly, the Varkala Surfing Championship was held in February.

3/9

Mulki, Karnataka

Often dubbed India’s "Surf Capital," Mulki, near Mangalore, is a hotspot on the west coast. The town has a thriving surf community, with dedicated surfing schools offering lessons and equipment. The swells here are ideal for surfers of all levels.

4/9

Sasihithlu Beach, Karnataka

Another gem near Mangalore, Sasihithlu Beach is known for its uncrowded shores and strong waves, making it a favorite among local surfers. Efforts have been made to promote it as an annual surfing destination. For those interested, the Indian Open of Surfing will be held at Sasihithlu Beach in Mangalore from May 31 to June 2. The event will be hosted by Mantra Surf Club.

5/9

Kovalam, Tamil Nadu

On the Coromandel Coast near Chennai, Kovalam has gained attention for its surf potential. It recently hosted India’s first night surfing event, showcasing its growing prominence in the surf scene. The waves here are suitable for both novices and pros. For beginners, there are a number of surfing schools around.

6/9

Manapad Beach, Tamil Nadu

Further south, Manapad Beach is celebrated for its kite surfing opportunities, thanks to its windy conditions and long stretches of coastline. It’s considered one of the finest surfing sites in India by enthusiasts.

7/9

Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

Near Chennai, Mamallapuram offers decent waves alongside its famous UNESCO heritage temples. It’s a popular spot on the east coast for surfers looking to combine culture and sport.

8/9

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

On the east coast, Vizag’s beaches like RK Beach and Rushikonda are gaining traction for surfing. While not as developed as the west coast spots, the waves here draw local surfers and beginners.

9/9

Puri, Odisha

Puri, also on the East Coast, is known for its beaches and is emerging as a surfing spot. The waves here are less consistent than the West Coast but still attract adventure seekers. April to June is the best time to try it out.
