The only country in the world that begins with letter 'Y'

There are around 195 countries across the world, with mostly all alphabets from A-Z, and it must be no less surprising to know that there is only one country across the globe whose name begins with the letter ‘Y’.

The country lies at the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, and is known for its mountainous terrain and diverse climate. According to Britannica, Yemen’s location at the southern entrance of the Red Sea made it a historic hub for trade, agriculture, and cultural exchange. Over centuries, it was famed for frankincense, myrrh, and spices, earning the Roman name Arabia Felix, which means “Fortunate Arabia.” Yemen is also where coffee was first commercially grown, making it a birthplace of this global beverage.

Here is some interesting information about the only country in the world that begins with the letter ‘Y’ and what are the places to be explored if you plan a visit

Political capitals of Yemen

Modern Yemen has two capitals for different functions. Sanaa is the political capital, historically the heart of the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen), and remains the seat of government. In contrast, Aden, the former capital of South Yemen and a vital port city, acts as the economic capital. This division followed the 1990 unification of North and South Yemen and shows a combination of their differing histories, that North Yemen was never colonised, while South Yemen was a British colony until 1967.

3/6

Sana’a

Sana’a, the ancient capital of Yemen, feels like a journey back through more than 2,500 years of history. Its Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famed for its striking mud-brick buildings adorned with intricate geometric designs, creating a skyline unlike any other. Highlights include the magnificent Al-Saleh Mosque, the bustling Yemen Gate Market, and the National Museum, each offering a deep insight into the nation’s vibrant culture and enduring heritage. The ideal time to explore Sana’a is from November to February, when the weather is pleasantly cool and perfect for sightseeing.

4/6

Socotra Island

Socotra Island is often called the “Galápagos of the Indian Ocean” because of its rare plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Famous for the dragon blood tree, it's surreal landscapes on Dixsam Plateau and the pristine Qalansiyah Beach attract nature lovers. Visitors can also venture into the fascinating Hoq Cave, famous for its dramatic limestone formations and enormous stalactites that glisten in the dim light. Exploring its winding chambers feels like stepping into a natural cathedral sculpted over millennia. The dry season, from October to April, offers the best conditions for a visit, with pleasant weather and clear skies.

5/6

Shibam

Shibam, known as the “Manhattan of the Desert,” is renowned for its cluster of over 500 mud-brick high-rises reaching up to 11 stories. Dating back to the 3rd century, this UNESCO-listed city features narrow lanes and towering, almost papier-mâché–like structures. Beyond the old city, the dramatic landscapes of Wadi Hadramaut beckon explorers. Visitors can take in sweeping views from the Shibam Walls and learn about the city’s remarkable architectural heritage at the local museum. The best time to visit is between October and March, when cooler weather and charming guesthouses in the old quarters make for a comfortable stay.

Climate, people, and wildlife of Yemen

Yemen’s climate varies greatly from tropical coastal areas near Aden and Hodeidah to cooler, higher-altitude regions like Sanaa. The people are primarily Arabs with historical northern and southern tribal divisions based in ancient origins.

The land supports a variety of plant life from dry-climate flora on the coast to temperate crops in the mountains such as coffee and khat. However, rapid population growth has caused forest loss. Yemen’s wildlife once included lions and ostriches, but many species have declined. Meanwhile, its waters are rich with a variety of marine life including tuna and shrimp.
