Wildlife by water: The best river and boat safaris in India

Land safaris are cool and all, but have you ever floated past an animal while being eyeballed by a curious another? Welcome to the wonderfully watery world of India’s boat and river safaris, where the jungle meets the riverbank—and sometimes climbs right into your boat (don’t take this seriously……..almost). River and boat safaris in India aren’t just about ticking off animals. They’re about listening to forest whispers, watching the sun reflection on the water, and maybe locking eyes with a curious creature from the shore. It’s a slow, scenic, slightly splashy way to reconnect with the wild.
So if you are ready—ditch the dusty jeep, hop in a canoe, and get to explore the other side of wildlife spotting.
Here’s your offbeat guide to the wildest wildlife safaris on water in India, where you and your“driver” both wear life jackets.

2/8

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

Set in the lush Western Ghats, Periyar is the OG of boat safaris. Float across the serene lake as elephants splash around the edges. Sambar deer, bison, and sometimes even a tiger or two make cameo appearances. It’s calm, it’s cool, it’s Kerala.

Best time: October to May
Pro tip: Early morning slots = more action and less crowd.

3/8

National Chambal Sanctuary, Uttar Pradesh/Rajasthan/Madhya Pradesh

This one’s for the reptile romantics. The Chambal River is home to the critically endangered gharial (think crocodile, but make it snouty and rare), mugger crocodiles, and gangetic dolphins that pop up like aquatic photobombers. Oh, and over 300 species of birds.

Best time: November to March
Pro tip: Bring binoculars and nerves of steel.

4/8

Sundarbans Forest, West Bengal

The world’s largest mangrove forest isn’t just a boat safari—it’s an adventure in full action. As your boat snakes through narrow creeks, keep an eye out for the elusive Royal Bengal tiger, known to take the occasional swim (yep, they swim). Also starring: saltwater crocodiles, fishing cats, and mudskippers.

Best time: September to March
Pro tip: Don’t expect to see tigers very easily.

5/8

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary, Odisha

This underrated gem on the Mahanadi River cuts through dramatic forested gorges, offering a peaceful, less-touristy boat safari experience. Gharials glide here smoothly, while eagles and kingfishers dive into the water like feathered missiles.

Best time: October to April
Pro tip: It’s ideal for eco-tourism and romantic silence (except when someone spots a croc).

6/8

Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha

Mangroves? Check. Saltwater crocs? Check. Giant monitor lizards and migrating birds? Triple check. This is India’s second-largest mangrove ecosystem, and a boat safari here feels like a dream come true in the wild.

Best time: November to February
Pro tip: Spotting baby crocs is oddly adorable.

7/8

Vikramshila Dolphin Sanctuary, Bihar

Located on the Ganges near Bhagalpur, this sanctuary is India’s only protected area for the endangered Gangetic river dolphin. These shy swimmers surface briefly for air, giving lucky boaters a magical moment of spotting them on the river.

Best time: October to June
Pro tip: Look for gentle ripples—and you might catch them in action.

8/8

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka

The Kali River in Dandeli offers coracle rides and river safaris through thick forests known for otters, crocodiles, hornbills, and even the occasional black panther sighting (if you are quite lucky). Bonus: adrenaline junkies can also sneak in some whitewater rafting.

Best time: October to May
Pro tip: Combine the safari with a stay in a jungle lodge for full immersion.
