8 most uniquely designed passports in the world

Passports have developed significantly and are much more than mere travel papers. Nowadays, passports in many nations serve as a symbol of their country, a fusion of art, literature, culture, and state-of-the-art security technology, all packed into one booklet. Passports with UV-sensitive illustrations, glow-in-the-dark images, indigenous artwork, microprinting, and animated pages have turned some passports into exquisite pieces of artwork.
Many countries have deliberately included these features to not only make passports aesthetically pleasing but also to prevent any form of forgery. Some passports have, at times, gained immense popularity on the internet, thanks to their aesthetic appeal and hidden features. Here is a list of the most unique passports in the world.

The passport of Norway is regarded as the benchmark of modern passports. The pages of the passport are filled with drawings of fjords, mountains, forests, and the coast of Norway. However, the most interesting part is revealed when you place the passport under ultraviolet rays, where the aurora borealis comes alive in an instant. This passport was designed by the Neue Design Studio.

Latvia

Latvian passport attracted worldwide attention due to highly detailed hidden UV artwork throughout the document. Forests, rivers, wolves, trees, as well as various patterns representing Latvia, are visible under UV light on numerous two-page landscapes depicting beautiful scenery. The passport was redesigned as a part of a sophisticated anti-forgery program featuring the use of invisible ink, micro-printing, and security features. Although various countries incorporate UV elements into passports, Latvian passport distinguishes itself from other passports by including fully hidden countryside scenes revealed only under UV light.

Canada’s passport became a viral sensation online after travellers discovered its hidden ultraviolet surprises. Under UV light, colourful fireworks explode across the pages while maple leaves and iconic Canadian landmarks suddenly glow into view. The design transformed the passport into one of the world’s most visually entertaining travel documents and showed how security features can also become artistic elements.

Finland

The passport of Finland is well-known all over the world for featuring unique animated flipbook images embedded in its pages. An earlier version of the Finnish passport had a walking moose animation that would become visible to those who quickly turned the pages of their passports, transforming the latter into an amusing design item. This year, Finland launched a new, redesigned passport which is based on the Archipelago Sea and features an improved wildlife illustration, such as that of a grey seal.

Switzerland

The new passport of Switzerland is widely recognised as one of the most technologically advanced passport designs in the world. It was launched in 2022 and was developed by the RETINAA studio based in Geneva. the passport uses detailed cartographic artwork, topographic lines, hydrological maps, and geometric patterns inspired by Swiss landscapes and waterways. This passport takes travellers from the mountainous regions of Switzerland to its 26 cantons and then further to the outside world. The contour maps, architecture, and other topographic features can be seen under ultraviolet light. While the bright red color of the cover has not been altered, the interior design of the passport is much more intricate than before.

Japan

The Japanese passport is known for its blend of artistic elements of Japan and high-tech anti-forgery technology. After its redesign in 2020, each visa page in the passport carries a unique print from Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e painting set, The Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Every double- page of the passport carries a unique painting depicting Mount Fuji. The Japanese passport got another upgrade in 2025 with the introduction of a polycarbonate photo page, laser engraving, sakura-themed elements, and crane watermarks.

New Zealand

The New Zealand passport is easily identifiable due to its uniquely designed black cover, with silver ferns embossed on it, which is an iconic representation of the country. The new passport design, which was implemented after the introduction of the ePassport system, includes elements such as silver designs, bilingual language text, and artwork that revolves around the concept of navigating and travelling. The recent passport design, which was issued in 2021, includes "Uruwhenua Aotearoa" and "New Zealand Passport." In addition, silver ferns have been embossed on the edges of the passport cover, making it stand out among most travel documents globally.

The Australian passport is not only a symbol of Australia but is also equipped with modern forgery protection mechanisms. The pages of the passport are decorated with beautiful pictures of Australia's unique flora and fauna as well as its landscapes, such as the image of kangaroos, emus, wattles, and coastal scenes. The pictures also become clearer under ultraviolet light. Moreover, there are other elements incorporated into the passport design that make forgery nearly impossible. Australia's passports are famous for their dark-blue covers, which makes them one of the most recognizable passports in the world.
