Indian Railways tickets price hike from December 26: See full list of new fare
In a recent update, the Ministry of Railways has officially announced a price hike in tickets. The new fare will come into effect on December 26, 2025. The change shows the government’s aim to rationalise fares and balance increasing operational costs. It will also strengthen the financial sustainability of the Indian Railways which is among the largest rail networks in the world. It is a modest but significant hike as it is going to impact overall ticketing revenue.
Understanding the new fare
Under the revised fare structure, there won’t be fare hike for:
Suburban (local) train services.
Monthly Season Tickets (MST) used by daily commuters.
Ordinary class travel for distances up to 215 km.
Fare hike for longer journeys
Ordinary class (beyond 215 km): ₹0.01 (1 paisa) per kilometre extra
Mail & Express trains – Non-AC and AC classes: ₹0.02 (2 paise) per kilometre extra.
For example, a trip of 500 km in a non-AC coach will now cost approximately INR 10 more than before under this new fare structure.
This fare hike is applicable only on the base passenger price. Other factors like reservation charges, superfast surcharges, GST, or any other fees which are applicable won’t be changed.
Why the hike
As per official announcements by the Railway Ministry, the fare revision is to meet the increasing operational and manpower costs. A statement from the Railways highlighted that the total operational cost for the year 2024-25 reached nearly INR 2.63 lakh crore.
What it means for passengers
For most long routes, the increase — even for journeys over 1,000 km — will be moderate. The Indian Railways’ decision to hike the passenger fares from December 26 is a strategic move which aims at striking a balance.
Special trains
Indian Railways has also announced plans to run special trains to meet the surge in travel during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. As of now, some 244 additional special trains have been announced, and officials have indicated that more services in the coming days, depending on passenger surge.
Special trains will also run on high-demand passenger routes connecting Delhi, Howrah and Lucknow, among others. These services are aimed at easing congestion.
