India’s first Bullet Train is almost here: Know the routes it will cover, its speed and the official launch date
Indian Railways is all set to change the way Indians will travel in trains in the future! All thanks to the first high-speed bullet train system (the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). India’s inaugural bullet train project is a result of years of planning, engineering challenges, and construction. But the good news is the train is all set to launch officially in August 2027, a day which is not far from now. As per official statements, the project is designed specifically for Japanese Shinkansen trains, ensuring technology compatibility and reliability.
Let’s have a closer look at the upcoming bullet train:
Connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad under three hours
It is one of the most ambitious projects which will connect Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat in under three hours. The bullet train project is among the most ambitious railway endeavours till date.
Stretching over 508 kilometres, this corridor will connect India’s financial capital, Mumbai, with the economic powerhouse of Ahmedabad. The train is designed to meet international high-speed rail standards. It will cross a series of tunnels along with a 21-kilometre underground tunnel. There will also be a 7-kilometre undersea section beneath Thane Creek, a significant civil engineering marvel!
In collaboration with Japan
The bullet train corridor is being built in partnership with Japan, with initial services set to operate using Shinkansen E5 series trains designed for high-speed travel. Trains on this route will be capable of running at speeds of up to 320 kmph, dramatically cutting travel time. Once operational, the journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is expected to take under three hours, a sharp reduction from the current rail travel time of seven to eight hours.
Official launch date
In a recent update from the Ministry of Railways and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the official launch date of the train is August 15, 2027. On this day, when the country will celebrate its Independence Day, the first bullet train service will run on a 100-km stretch between Surat and Vapi, as per official announcement.
Stations
This corridor will have 12 stations:
In Maharashtra: Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Thane, Virar, Boisar
In Gujarat: Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati
As per official statements, bullet trains will run every 15–20 minutes. Bullet trains are believed to boost regional economies by reducing travel time.
India’s bullet train is a landmark project which represents a major upgrade in the country’s railway infrastructure by blending international technology with domestic execution. With official launch set for August 2027 and full operational capability by 2029, the project not only promises to transform intercity travel but also bring economic growth.
