Good news coming from Jammu and Kashmir! After the unfortunate terror attack in Pahalgam, the tourism sector in the Jammu and Kashmir administration is working towards restoring normalcy by reopening 16 of its 48 popular tourist destinations. These tourist attractions were shut down following a tragic terror attack on 22 April, 2025.
The news was announced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on June 14, 2025, nearly two months after the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists. Soon after, all the tourist activities were banned in the region over safety concerns.
Following the tragic attack, the administration under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha temporarily closed 48 out of Jammu and Kashmir’s 87 tourist destinations. On Saturday, during a visit to Pahalgam, LG Sinha held a meeting with a diverse group of stakeholders, including elected representatives, tour and travel operators, pony owners, and members of hotel associations.
The phased reopening news reflects a cautious yet optimistic approach by the government. These reopenings come as a relief to the region’s struggling tourism industry. After the attack, tourism, which is a crucial part of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy and identity, was hit severely.

Gulmarg: Gulmarg is a globally-famous town noted for its world-class skiing activities. The Gulmarg Gondola is a magnet for winter sports enthusiasts. The place is once again reopened to tourists.
Pahalgam: Pahalgam was the site of the recent terror attack. But the place has resumed welcoming tourists. This town is not only beautiful but also serves as the base camp for the yearly Amarnath Yatra.
Sonamarg: Sonamarg, also known as the "Meadow of Gold," is once again open to trekkers. Nature lovers are attracted by its alpine meadows and streams.
Bhaderwah: Bhaderwah, nestled in the Doda district, offers a quieter and equally stunning escape with its lush valleys and cool mountain air.
Sharing an update on social media platform X, LG Sinha said, "I've ordered reopening of some of the tourist spots in Kashmir & Jammu Divisions, which were temporarily closed as precautionary measures. Betab Valley & Parks in Pahalgam Market, Verinag Garden, Kokernag Garden and Achabal Garden to be reopened from 17th June."
The reopening of Kashmir’s tourist attractions is part of a broader recovery strategy. It also involves increased coordination between tourism authorities and security agencies. The administration has assured that strict safety protocols are in place, with added security and ground-level monitoring.
With government efforts, added security, and the gradual reopening, Jammu and Kashmir is taking a major leap toward reclaiming its reputation as one of India's most scenic travel destinations.
