Special train from New Delhi to Sabarmati announced for fans ahead of India–New Zealand T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad
With excitement building for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final, the Northern Railway (@RailwayNorthern) has announced on their official handle on X at 12:55 PM (March 7, 2026) that a special train from New Delhi to Sabarmati will operate to help cricket fans travel to Ahmedabad for the title clash between India national cricket team and the New Zealand national cricket team on March 8.
The Northern Railways’ official post states, “A Special Gift from Indian Railways for Cricket Lovers! Considering the increased flight ticket prices and unavailability of tickets, Indian Railways has announced a special train from New Delhi to Sabarmati for passengers' convenience, departing today, March 7, 2026, at 11:45 PM. Book your seat in this 19-coach train featuring 3rd AC and 2nd AC coaches!”
The final will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium, one of the world’s largest cricket venues. The special train service was introduced after many supporters struggled to arrange travel at short notice, as match tickets were released late. Airfares to Ahmedabad surged soon after the final was confirmed, leaving several fans searching for affordable alternatives.
According to the railway authorities, the special train numbered 04062 will depart from New Delhi Railway Station at 11:45 pm on March 7 and is scheduled to arrive at Sabarmati at 2:30 pm on March 8, just hours before the match begins. The train will halt at Delhi Cantt, Gurugram, and Jaipur along the way. Railway officials said the train will operate with 19 coaches, including Second AC and Third AC compartments, to accommodate the large number of travelling fans.
Meanwhile, the Indian team has already arrived in Ahmedabad ahead of the highly anticipated final. The squad landed in the city on March 6 and is scheduled to hold a training session in the evening between 6 pm and 9 pm. The New Zealand team will take the field earlier in the day for their practice session from 2 pm to 5 pm, with their pre-match press conference planned for 1:30 pm. India’s media interaction will begin shortly before the team’s practice session.
The upcoming final carries added significance for India. The side, led by Suryakumar Yadav, has never defeated New Zealand in the history of the T20 World Cup. A win on Sunday would therefore mark a historic breakthrough. India is also chasing another milestone, becoming the first team to win the tournament in back-to-back editions and the first to claim the title on home soil.
With a packed stadium expected and thousands of fans travelling to the city, the stage is set for a high-stakes contest as India looks to rewrite history against New Zealand.
