Vande Bharat Sleeper Train 2025: First look, features, routes & launch details
The first glimpse of India’s highly anticipated premium overnight Vande Bharat Train has finally been revealed! The teaser showcases a sleek and impressive design, leaving everyone eager to experience it firsthand. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is a long-distance, high-speed electric multiple unit (EMU) train, crafted to offer a perfect blend of speed, comfort, and modern amenities.
While the train has become synonymous with semi-high-speed daytime travel. And now here is the sleeper version which allows passengers to enjoy longer journeys with premium facilities. So on this note, let's have a look at the new sleeper version of Vande Bharat, which looks futuristic, modern and amazing.
The Sleeper Version
Daytime Vande Bharat trains, offering both chair-car and executive seating, have effectively bridged the gap between Shatabdi and Rajdhani services. Yet, for journeys covering 700–1,200 km or more, overnight travel requires proper sleeping arrangements to ensure passenger comfort. To meet this need, Indian Railways, as announced by the PIB, has introduced the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. This new sleeper variant is poised to redefine long-distance travel in India by merging the speed and efficiency of Vande Bharat trains with the convenience of overnight berths. Passengers can now enjoy uninterrupted rest, modern amenities, and a premium travel experience, making lengthy journeys more comfortable, convenient, and time-efficient for business travellers, families, and leisure tourists alike.
The move is also a part of broader vision to modernize its long-distance rail network, making it comparable to global high-speed overnight services while retaining affordability for domestic travellers.
Capacity
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to feature a 16-coach prototype, including:
11 AC 3-Tier coaches
4 AC 2-Tier coaches
1 AC First Class coach
This configuration will allow seating and sleeping for approximately 1,128 passengers, with 823 berths reserved for travelers and 34 for onboard staff. Each coach is fully air-conditioned and designed to enhance comfort, featuring wider bunk beds, ladders, and ergonomic interiors.
Passenger safety and comfort have been given top priority. The coaches will feature multiple restrooms, including one designed for passengers with disabilities, along with automatic inter-coach doors and advanced odour-control systems. The train will also be equipped with Kavach, India’s indigenous train collision-avoidance system, and will incorporate modern amenities such as sensor-based lighting, digital information display panels, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB charging ports, and a public announcement system. (As per Railway Supply, 2025)
Speed and Performance
Built on the same aerodynamic EMU platform as the daytime Vande Bharat trains, the sleeper version is designed for a maximum operational speed of 180 km/h, with typical service speeds of 160 km/h. The multiple-unit architecture allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, making it efficient on long-distance routes. (As per Railway Technology, 2025)
Launch
Media and official sources suggest the sleeper Vande Bharat will initially connect Delhi with destinations such as Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Patna, covering distances of up to 1,000 km in significantly reduced travel times. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw indicated that the official launch is scheduled once the second trainset is ready, targeting mid-October 2025.
If executed successfully, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will offer an unmatched combination of speed, comfort, and modern amenities, setting a new benchmark for luxury rail travel in India. It represents a major step forward in the country’s transportation revolution - blending innovation, elegance, and efficiency and convenience for passengers of all kinds. With its futuristic design and passenger-first features, this train is not just a mode of travel but a symbol of India’s evolving rail excellence and its journey toward world-class infrastructure.
