5 best Indian forests to see wild Asian elephants in January

Among the few natural moments in India that one finds humbling is witnessing a group of Asian elephants walking silently in the forested areas and grazing in meadows. The winter season in January is one such time when one gets to spot these gentle giants easily in their natural habitats because it is a time when the winter safari is in full swing.
India is home to the largest population of wild Asian elephants in the world, and its forests, especially in the south, northeast and central belt, offer some of the most rewarding elephant-viewing experiences. Here are five of the best Indian forests to see wild elephants in January.

2/6

Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, Karnataka

Nestled within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Nagarhole National Park ranks among India’s most important landscapes for observing wild elephants. Its mix of moist deciduous forests, teak plantations and riverine grasslands lies along the vital Nilgiri–Eastern Ghats elephant corridor, allowing the park to sustain a large and stable elephant population.

January is considered one of the best months to explore Nagarhole. With winter setting in, elephants are frequently seen near the Kabini backwaters, forest clearings and along safari routes. Visitors may encounter sizable herds led by matriarchs, often engaged in grazing, bathing or leisurely crossing forest roads—offering memorable wildlife sightings.

3/6

Periyar Tiger Reserve Kerala

Periyar is one of India’s most beautiful wildlife reserves and a prime habitat for Asian elephants in the Western Ghats mountain ranges. Its evergreen and semi-evergreen forests entrench the Periyar Lake, naturally attracting animals during the dry season of winter months when water becomes scarce in the region. Weather in January is amicable with improved perspicuity in the forests, thereby allowing further sighting of elephants in their natural habitat. They are usually noticed in their scores around the shores of the Periyar Lake, grasslands, and forests in the early morning or late afternoon hours. Interestingly, in Periyar wildlife sanctuary, one can take boat rides to watch the elephants!

4/6

Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong landscape, Assam

Kaziranga National Park is world-renowned for its one-horned rhinos, but it is also home to several elephant ranges, with Kaziranga and Karbi Anglong being a large one. This region sees a good population of elephants seasonally migrating between flood plains and forested elevations; January is a good time to explore this region. The region’s flood waters drain and dry up following monsoons, and the area becomes accessible to roam into elephant habitats grazing and with families moving into open spaces and forested zones. The western and core ranges inside Kaziranga National Park offer jeep safari entries, which will let you spot ele‍phants. The adjacent Karbi Anglong ranges offer a forested environment.

5/6

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu

Mudumalai, a sanctuary situated at the junction points of three states - Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala - is the other main component of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is a major migration route for elephants from Bandipur, Nagarhole, and Wayanad. During January, the terrain is mostly arid, and the growth is sparse, making it easy to locate elephants. Elephant herds are usually found near watering points, forest paths, and bamboo patches. Being close to other large reserves raises the possibility of observing large herds.

6/6

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary forms a critical link between Bandipur and Nagarhole, which is also one of the India’s most important elephant corridors. The sanctuary’s forests are a rejuvenating blend of coffee plantations, hills and valleys, creating a mosaic landscape that is most loved by elephants. January is a good season to witness elephants in Wayanad because elephants roam freely in forested and grassland areas. This is because spotting often happens along forest roads, along water bodies, or at the boundaries of plantations in the Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges.
