5 national parks in India where you can spot the endangered wild dogs (Dholes)

Wild Dogs are among the endangered species that roam in the forests of India. The Indian national parks are home to these remarkable creatures which are also known as dholes. The dhole, or Indian wild dog are noted for their fiery red coat, black tail, and sharp whistle-like calls. Not many must be aware of the fact that these animals are also quite intelligent and social. These hunt in tight packs and are widespread across Asia. But today dholes are now endangered.

If you get to spot a dhole in the wild, consider yourself lucky as it is a rare sight. On this note, let’s have a look at five places in India where you can still hope to see the elusive wild dog.

2/6

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh–Maharashtra

Pench National Park is among those places one can spot wild dogs. The park’s dry deciduous forests, and wet patches offer perfect space for dhole packs to hunt. These creatures can be commonly seen in Pench’s core zones, especially around water regions. In packs, these can chase prey for long distances. Wildlife lovers can have a chance of spotting these at dawn or dusk safaris. Seek help from experienced guides.

3/6

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh

Bandhavgarh is another best place to spot dholes. There have been reports of dhole packs reappearing after a long absence. But dhole sightings here are rare. Visitors are advised to ask forest guides about recent dhole activity. They are sometimes spotted near the Tala and Magadhi zones. The return of dholes here also highlights the importance of landscape connectivity.

4/6

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

Tadoba in Maharashtra is among the oldest national parks which is noted for supporting a healthy tiger population. But the place is also a natural space for the population of rare wild dogs. The reserve’s dense teak forests and water bodies offer these creatures to thrive. These animals can be spotted in packs, especially during the early morning when they move through open forest tracks or congregate near waterholes.

5/6

Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh

Kanha Tiger Reserve also offers excellent opportunities to spot dholes. The place that inspired Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, is a perfect place to encounter wild dogs and the vast protected area supports a healthy population of herbivores. Here, dhole packs can often be seen roaming the meadows.

They are highly social animals, living in family groups of 8–15 individuals. Visitors should go on multiple safaris over a few days to improve their chances. Even if you don’t see dholes, the thrill of knowing such a dynamic predator roams these forests adds an extra layer of magic.

6/6

Nagarhole National Park, Karnataka

Nagarhole is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in southern India, is one of the best-preserved forest ecosystems in the Western Ghats — and a confirmed stronghold for wild dogs. Together with adjoining Bandipur, Wayanad, and Mudumalai reserves, it forms a vast, continuous forest landscape where dholes thrive. These places are every wildlife photographer’s dream destinations where they have reported incredible scenes of capturing dholes chasing different animals. Their boldness and teamwork are legendary. These parks offer perfect ground where dholes can run and hunt in packs. Packs of dholes can be seen resting along the Kabini backwaters as well. But the sightings can be unpredictable.
