Celebrating Gangaur: Top destinations in Rajasthan to experience this colourful tradition

The Gangaur Festival is among Rajasthan's most colourful and culturally rich festivals that marks the arrival of spring. For those who don’t know, the celebration is dedicated to Goddess Gauri, the wife of Lord Shiva. This festival holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Rajasthan, especially women. They observe colourful rituals for the well-being of their husbands or future spouses.
The festival is an ideal combination of tradition, culture, and colour. Whether in the royal streets of Jaipur or the vibrant city of Udaipur, this celebration offers an authentic glimpse into Rajasthan’s rich heritage and traditions.
Jaipur is the hub of all the procession which moves from the City Palace to Gangauri Bazaar, where local vendors sell traditional items. Choti Chaupar and Tripolia Bazaar are the hotspots where visitors can witness the lively celebrations.

Let’s have a look at best places in Rajasthan to experience the colourful festival:

Also known as the ‘City of Lakes,’ Udaipur is a fantastic destination to experience Gangaur festivities. The city is famous for its beautiful lakes, and during the festival, Lake Pichola comes alive with decorated boats carrying idols of the goddess. The processions are a blend of traditional rituals. Gangaur Ghat on Lake Pichola is a must-visit for witnessing the celebration in full swing.

The ‘Pink City’ of Rajasthan is considered the heart of Gangaur celebrations. It’s a royal affair at the City Palace. The palace, with its majestic courtyards offer an ideal backdrop for the grand procession that takes place on the final day of the festival. The streets are decorated with numerous colours as women in traditional dresses carry idols of Goddess Gauri.
